STRIPED BASS FISHING STILL GOING STRONG AROUND FIRE ISLAND

6/30/2015

I fished today with Troy, Dillon, Jeff and Linda (left to right) and we had a great morning of fishing.

The bait was thick just outside the inlet and we fished hard and were rewarded with a great catch of bass and bluefish. We had bluefish up to 16 pounds and bass to 32 pounds and we all had a great time.

Another great day on the water with a really great crew.

Nice going guys and gals.

Kismet Inn 20th Annual Striped Bass Tounament Results

PictureTop 3 Bass of the Tournament
The morning started out tranquil but when the tide turned, so did the intensity of the wind,  by 1:30pm the wind was out of the west at 25 plus knots. Our crew found a bunker school off of Ocean Beach holding fish, we put up seven Bass in an hour with our largest being 22 pounds. There was no shortage of Bunker pods, but only a few of the schools were holding bait.

1st place was caught by Rene Chavalli and weighed in at 30 pounds 3 ounces. 2nd and 3rd was a split, both fish weighed in at 24 pounds and were caught on the same boat. Bob Helgans and Steven Helgans must have sharings the winnings. Their fish were caught off of Davis Park and the winner pulled has Striper off a school off of Point O' Woods.

Once again the Cole family did a fantastic job putting out a spread of food  and organizing the event and getting many great sponsors.

Fishing Report

Herniated Disc is pushing on nerve, Dr. says don't lay around try to keep moving along with PT so we headed out again. Found a huge pod right away holding big fish. We had non stop action for 2 hours, all fish were between 30 to 49.4lbs. Left them biting, we were all tired. My buddy Rob Hudson had the 49.4 fish his biggest to date..

Fishing Report
Been laid up with a herniated disc in my back but had to get out today. My son Luke and I headed out in search of some big fish on the pods. I gave him a light spinning setup and told him to snag a few bunker for the well. After snagging a few he then connected with a 44lb fish on that small penn battle 5000. Well after a long battle he got it boat side and we boated it. Fish was spent from the fight so we could not revive it. He quickly switched to a heavier outfit! We then had a blast catching and releasing about 10 fish 28lbs and up. Great day he will remember for a long time! Rich Figlia..

Big Bass on Bunker Pods Fire Island

I fished with Kevin Ryan and his friend Scott. We had a super day of bass fishing with about 20 fish to 48 pounds on the bunker pods.

The lousy weather report never happened and it turned out to be a perfect weather day. We kept  couple of fish for the table and released all others including the 48 pound beauty.

A really great day of fishing Fire Island with an excellent crew.

Suffolk Marine Anglers  Spring Bass Results 2014

PictureMark Wrobleski 49.9 1st Place
June 8th, Babylon Village Long Island

Sunday June 8th was tournament day for Suffolk Marine Anglers. The weather could have not of been more perfect with light wind and sunshine all day. 40 boats throttled up out of the hole at the shot gun start and the 6th annual striped bass competition was underway.

News 12's Sean Bergin was onboard the committee boat covering the event and shooting his weekly feature "Road Trip" which is aired on Tuesdays. He also helped out as the guest weigh master.

Most boats fished the ocean working the schools of bunker. A few fish were caught in the morning but the action really heated after lunchtime. This tournament may hold the recorded for most big fish in a one day competition. There were eight places, the top Bass was weighed in by Mark Wrobleski just shy of 50 pounds at 49.9 pounds. The last placing Striper was 34.95 pounds.

Thousands of Dollars was raised for Hospice Care Network  and Miller’s Ale House of Deer Park  donated the hot food and cold drinks and without them this tournament could have never evolved to what it is today.

Thanks to all the sponsors for their support and help and making this even a great spring Tradition.

Video coverage to follow soon.

Today I fished with George and we had a good day of fishing. I would say the bass run in Fire Island is happening. We had nice fish up to 28 pounds on live bait.

Picture
No monsters but good fish in clean water and on the feed. The bluefish are out of control. All you shark guys should get out in the bay or inlet and load up for shark bait.

Picture
The Coast Guard and the DEC were out there in force doing their job. They boarded my boat and did a safety inspection. They were very courteous and checked all my safety gear which was all in good order. I wouldn't want to mess with the guy on my right, he was very big but a good guy as they all were.

We also saw the DEC officers checking guys fishing on the jetties by the OBI which is also good as I see them keeping small fish all the time.

We rounded out the day with some blowfish, fluke and all the bluefish we could handle. It was a fun day on the water with George and now tomorrow we go back to rebuilding boats. Lots of tank jobs to do.
