PictureCapt. Al with John Nappo checking out the latest version of the Gibbs Tuna candy.
Skimmeroutdoors and Gibbs Lures go a long way back. When Matt from Gibbs found out about the San Diego to Cabo San Lucas fishing trip he sent along an assortment of beefy lures to test out on Tuna and Wahoo and any other pelagic species we may cross paths with. We look forward to testing these new prototypes out on this Pacific adventure.

Over the last decade the fishing industry has seen many improvements in clothing that protects the angler from the UV rays of the sun. There are many advantages to these garments aside from providing protection from the sun. The material is designed to breath allowing you to stay cooler and negate the heat of the sun's rays on your skin. Another advantage is you will need less sunscreen and the material is very thin allowing more room in your suitcase. Lastly the fabric is treated to resist stains and drys very quickly. These long sleeved shirts from Deep Ocean apparel are a must in the tropics.

A few must have items

When traveling to remote reaches of the globe communicating with family and friends can be nearly Impossible. Back in 2008 I picked up a Spot personal emergency beacon. This was a simple way to let a select few know that you were safe. When you hit the okay button people that you have predetermined would receive an email or a text saying you were okay with a Lat and Lon. If there was an emergency you would hit the 911 button and wait to be rescued, fortunately I never had to use this feature. The Spot at the time was around $150 and there is yearly service fee of around $100. The newer models work with your smart phone and allow you to send one way custom text messages.

Affordable Satellite Phone

A satellite Telephone was a very expensive option until recently. The Globalstar GSP-1700 is an affordable satellite phone for around $400 and monthly service starts at less than $25 and there are seasonal plans for you offshore canyon fisherman. Not so bad for peace of mind. No matter where you are you can call 911 and your call will be routed to the GEOS Rescue Coordination Center and they will send out the rescue team. Mike Dituri of General Audio -Visual Inc.  Freeport Long Island is a fisherman and a dealer in this technology and he can help you pick the plan that is right for you.

Ditch Bag

Whenever I am offshore I always prepare a ditch Bag. I use the top half of my camera bag for this, here are the items like to include
  • Spot
  • Cell phone in water tight pouch
  • My yellow slicker for visibility
  • Led Flashing Light
  • Sunscreen
  • Nutrition Bars
  • A few bottles of water
  • Whistle
  • Jumbo Hefty zip lock bag (fill it with air and you have a PFD)

If you are close to shore you can make a call on your cell phone if you had to. Way off shore is another story chances are you will see the rescuers well before they see you and you can get on the VHF and send them in the right direction. The sat phone is not waterproof so not sure how much use it may have but you can most likely use it from the jumbo hefty. If you have other items I would love to hear from you, so please leave a comment.

Hunting Report
Headed out at sunrise, we found some open water in a favorite spot, while setting up gadwalls and widgeon were flying in. After setting up we had our limit of blacks right away. It was awesome watching black ducks land 10 feet from the boat over and over again. Decoys kept getting iced and tide was getting low so we had to pack in the season.. Made it back safe after plowing through some ice. Had a great season.. Rich

This weekend I will be packing my gear for the big trip ahead. I need to make sure I don't forget anything and it will all fit in my bags. I will be bringing a DSLR camera HD camcorder and a gopro.  we plan on capturing many hours of underwater footage and hope to document a Wahoo blitz with the Troll Pro. I've learned from experience all the little things to pack and there are many. Tim C. Smith

The provisions and gear have been shipped

With the amount of gear that is headed out west John from Trophy Tackle organized freighting it to the west coast. With the crazy prices charged for checking bags and fishing gear this was the most cost effective way to go. Included in the shipment, lures from various manufactures to field test and all the ingredients for Jimmy the cop's famous sauce (gravy). Remember starting February 1st follow all the action on the Fisherman's website.

Phantom Flying Camera

The fishing trip of a lifetime is approaching fast. One of the tools we will be using for capturing video from outside of the boat will be this Phantom II quad copter. We will now be able to get camera angles that at one time could have only been possible with another boat or helicopter. Let's hope we don't fly her into the water. Remember starting February 1st visit the Fisherman.com to follow all the action on the Excel fishing Trip.
