Last Days in the Baja Mexico sun

3/26/2015

March is my least favorite month on Long Island, it always seems to be windy and raw. The east cape area of Baja was the perfect choice. The weather is consistently in the mid eighties and the nights cools down to the sixty's. Next time down I plan on renting an ATV for my whole stay and really explore fishing from the beach.

Mexico is a big country and few years back the news media in the states relentlessly reported about the violence in the country. Baja is separated from mainland Mexico and there was never an issue about safety here. When I stay at Hotel Buena Vista I have never locked my room. The stall is loyle

Snorkeling, East Cape Baja, Mexico

The day started with whale sightings just offshore while enjoying our breakfast. Today's weather conditions were perfect for our day of snorkeling. Last time we were down here we snorkeled Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, an area accessible only by boat, and it was amazing. Today's adventure was going to be a beach snorkel trip to Punta Pescadero 10 miles up the coast. The drive up the coast was breathtaking and I would recommend it for the views alone. Simon was our transportation, guide and dive master. I recommend stopping in Los Barriles for cervezas and snacks, Simon will provide a cooler with ice and water as well as a blanket and an umbrella. The dive outfit http://diveinbaja.com/ supplies everything you need including a wet suit - even though the water is warm, you may feel chilly after snorkeling for a while and the suit provides protection from the sun, as well as added buoyancy. The beach has an incredible view and easy access to the snorkeling area. Simon is there for you if you need, or you are free to explore on your own. The area has plenty of marine life, including live coral.

After snorkeling we enjoyed a couple of ice cold beers on the beach and just took in the view. The coastline has many beach-side bars with great views and Punta Pescadero is no exception. Simon recommended a margarita at the Punta Pescadero Hotel, which not only makes a great cocktail, but has a panoramic view that must be experienced.

Hotel Buena Vista Beach and pool

The inshore fishing such as for dorado and rosterfish hasn't started yet, the only fishing has been for marlin. The boats that have ventured out have averaged about two marlin per day. For me and my wife, this trip has been more about rest and relaxation than fishing. If you don't fish there is still plenty to do. The beach in front of the hotel is great for swimming or just laying out. There are never big waves, just maybe a light chop from time to time. The pool is large with a swim up bar as well as a kiddie area. There is also a naturally fed hot spring pool; this area is famous for its hot springs.

Hotel Buena Vista East Cape, Baja California Mexico

It's been 5 years since our last trip to the East Cape region of Baja California, it's nice to be back and see all the familiar faces.

Hotel Buena Vista is located about 55 miles northeast of Cabo San Lucas on the Sea of Cortez. There are no open harbors, just sand, so the boats are launched from the beach. It is very interesting to watch for a boater from back east.

This area of the cape is much more peaceful and quite than Cabo San Lucas, it's also easier on your wallet as well. Another thing that you will not see here are local vendors trying to sell you souvenirs at every turn. I'm told by the locals that Buena Vista resembles the Cabo of 40 years ago.

PEREGRINE FALCON TAKING A BATH IN A PUDDLE IN BABYLON

3/17/2015

I was checking out the bay conditions for hunting and saw this peregrine falcon make a pass trying to get a pigeon. It then calmly perched on a light pole and then flew down into a puddle in the parking lot and proceeded to take a five minute bath. Amazing that a bird that was so rare 20 years ago is now plentiful and living and hunting in close proximity to suburbia. A great sight to see.
