WONDER DOG JAX ON A HUNTERS GARDEN WALK UP PHEASANT AND CHUCKAR PARTRIDGE HUNT WITH RICH AND NICK SANTOS AND CAPTAIN AL

12/23/2016

Captain Rich Santos and his son Nick who is visiting on leave from his post at Coast Guard headquarters in Ketchecan Alaska and yours truly went on a walk up hunt at Hunter's Garden preserve with the most awesome dog Jax.
We were wondering how Jax would perform after a layoff period during the summer months and all his swimming in the pool. Turns out nothing changed but only got better. He worked like a champion that he is and covered the field like a blanket. We bagged 13 out of 15 birds put out. We missed one and never saw the other which would have made for a full 15 bird bag.

It was a great day in the field and it felt so good to be out there again with Rich, Nick and Jax.

We are tuned up and ready for the Louisiana trip.

GREAT CLASSIC LAYOUT BROADBILL SHOOT WITH RED OSTER  OF REDHEAD GUIDE SERVICE AND A GREAT CREW OF DUCK HUNTERS

12/19/2016

Today I had the opportunity to hunt with probably the best open water layout guides that ever worked the waters of the Great South Bay namely Red Oster and his brother Steve. We had an excellent crew besides me Red and Steve including Craig Kessler, Ron, Chris, Eric.

Today was also a kind of tribute to the late Schuyler Watts who was also one of the if not the best layout shoot guides ever on the Great South Bay. We were thinking about him today and his memory will live on and our thoughts are also of his beautiful wife Mary who we all love and is doing well..

We found the birds we love to hunt and set up early. It was cold, windy and overcast and we were in a lee from the wind, perfect conditions. I was given the challenge of being first in the hunting boat reputation on the line. My stay lasted all of 5 minutes. The birds were really tending and I killed my limit of two right away. It was red hot for an hour or two and we quickly had half our limit but the sun came out and ice built up on the decoys and it slowed some. Craig Kessler got into the Scooter and killed one broadbill and then two geese flew over at 40 yards, Craig lined up the lead bird and dropped it dead. The other bird circled and came over again and Craig dropped it dead as could be. Bonus birds we call them. He then finished with his second breadbill and his limit. Time to get the next hunter in the boat.

Chris had his two broadbill and also a bonus bird a ruddy duck. Very unusual.

Ron and Eric got their limits and the Red went in the Scooter and with his new VersaMax killed the first two ducks that came to the rig. Nice gun but I still love my Benelli.

Stevie finished out the day with his limit and we picked up the rig and headed home after a mosty beautiful and satisfying day of hunting with true lovers of the sport.

It doesn't get any better!

FISHING/HUNTING REPORT FOR DECEMBER 16-18

12/15/2016

The fishing and hunting report for this week is cancelled! Its too cold! I know it will warm up some next week but this weekend is a bust for all but the most hardy and foolish. You might be able to hunt ducks and geese inland in a good protected spot but the weather is aweful. High winds, bitter cold, snow and freezing rain will make driving horrible and unsafe. Be very careful out there. This is not the time to be a hero. For a few days it might look like the photo below of the ice pushing up against the north side of the bay.

Next week looks like a winner for the migaratory bird hunters. Warming up after m
Monday and the birds from north are showing up by us now.

I will be doing a couple of upland hunts at Hunter's Garden in Northhampton with Captain Rich Santos and his awesome dog Jax when conditions warrant.

A litte ice is always good for waterfowling on the Great South Bay and I think this is going to be a banner year.

A note to all about the most common reasons to be cited by the DEC. Make sure you have a duck stamp signed by you, a HIP number also written on your license and a plug in your gun. be respectful of other hunters as they are our brethren and always share information to get more involved in the sport especially the younger generation.

Always be safe and enjoy the great outdoors here in Long Island which has a rich history in waterfowling.

Good luck to all of you out there and have a great season!

Rice Breast Black Duck

Hunting Report
Did a quick afternoon hunt. Took the meadow box way back deep in the marsh.. 10 min into hunt had a black duck commit dropped it 10 yards out.. Had a bunch of other black ducks come in and just watched.. Later when went to breast the duck out I noticed it had Rice Breast..
After hatching, the baby parasites migrate to the skeletal muscles and form cysts. The cysts resemble grains of rice and run in parallel lines throughout the muscle, usually the breast and thigh. Dabbling ducks — such as the mallard, gadwall , widgeon and so forth — are most susceptible to rice breast

some people say you can still consume it but I chose not to. This is only the second time I have a shot a bird with this condition.

Last Competition of the year

Tres Palm in Babylon Village had the last striped bass tounament of the year this past Sunday. A great turnout for a cold morning start. Only 5 fish were weighed in with the winning fish being just over 17 pounds. This was taken abord the "Bandit" and the angler was Dan Galfano. The only other boat to weigh a fish was Gerogre Yurcak's boat the "Pussy Bomb". Jimmy Flynn weighed in the 11 pond monster.

Danny did a great job with hot clam chowder and beer waiting at the dock and great meal awaiting the anglers inside.
