Fishing Report
Antonio and I did a day trip with RJ Boyle (the god father of sword fishing) out of Lighthouse Point Florida. We started trolling before sunrise and quickly caught a kingfish then a wahoo in 200 -300 feet. With fish in the box we ran east to gulf stream water and we're schooled on the art of rigging belly baits for deep dropping. With 18 pounds of lead we hit bottom then took 50 cranks to get the bait in the zone. On our second drift we had a quick tap tap on the tip and we were hooked up. RJ is a good captain and a great teacher of this fishery. Get south and book a charter and learn this game it will work in our canyons.

ITS TIME TO BOOK A CHARTER WITH CAPTAIN AL

3/25/2016

We are now headed into spring and the fishing season is just around the corner. I am starting to get bookings for spring bass trips and summer fluke trips. The best thing to do is get a date set in my book. If the weather or the fishing is not good we can always move it back but if you are not in the book then you will be last priority when moving dates around. If you are in my book then you will get the next best available date to fish. It is always on a first come first serve basis. Spring bass fishing gets going around mid May with a mix of small fish on jigs and plugs and some on bait. By late May the bigger fish are more common but boat traffic is not a problem even on a weekend. In late May we mix it up with bass, weakfish and big fluke and even flounder on the best tides. Come June its mostly big bass on bait and plugs and that goes on through mid July. Though July, August and September we are catching quality fluke both inshore and offshore and this is the best time to book for a trip with the family either out of the mainland or Fire Island communities. Early October is the start of the fall bass fishing season with inshore action on plugs and also some on bait. By mid October the big fish become more plentiful and the hot fall season begins to take shape. The action only gets better through late October into early November and fishing is excellent up to Thanksgiving when the weather usually turns for the worse. Fishing is usually still good at that time and I may extend the season but it all depends upon Mother Nature.

Keep in mind that on any given day other types of fish may be on the feed and I am geared up for all species. After May 15 weakfish, fluke, flounder and striped bass are all on the menu. Sea bass come into action after July 15 and mid August through September triggerfish and Little Tunny on crank baits offer great fun and porgies (scup) are always in the mix after May 1. Blackfish in the fall with combination trips for these hard fighting and tasty fish will fill in the day with a combination of striped bass and blackfish (tautog). Late August and September also offer an opportunity to target big weakfish and fluke on live bait. Trophy fish are common at this time.

If Mother Nature cooperates it is possible to get in on tuna chunking and jigging if the fish show up inshore within 50 miles and the weather is good. Sharking on light tackle with all release fishing is also in the mix.

Bottom line is get a date in the book and we can always work around your schedule, the weather and the fishing opportunities.

If you want to book a date or want to know all the particulars about what a day on the "Skimmer" involves you can click on Charter Captain Al on the top header of the website. You can also contact me via email at that same page. You do not need a New York State fishing license when fishing on the "Skimmer" as all members of a charter are covered under my license.

I look forward to a great season as the water is clean and the bait is already plentiful. It should be a great season.

I am once again proud to be representing Mercury Marine as a Pro Team member and have a brand new Mercury OptiMax Pro XS 225 engine on the back of my boat "Skimmer". I am now affiliated with Marine Max in Lindenhurst NY and they have been very gracious in accepting me into their fold as a Mercury Pro Team member and I will be promoting their business as I always do with dedicated sponsors like Marine Max. I will be continuing my fishing reports on www.skimmeroutdoors.com and in the Fire Island Tide newspaper. I will also have Captain Rich Santos working with me and he will be available if I am not and also to work larger groups with two boats.

I am excited about the 2016 season and look forward to fishing with you.

MARCO ISLAND OFFSHORE AND INSHORE FISHING PARADISE

3/7/2016

I did a short trip with Wes Little Jr. to Marco Island for a few days of fishing. We stayed at his parents house on a canal in Marco. Wes Senior and his wife Lynn were extremely gracious having me as their guest. We also joined forces with Wes's cousin Scott Little, his friend Steve and his dad Craig (Doc) and had a great time. We fished a tower 40 miles out and had a blast with all the amberjack you could catch and lots of barracuda. We also caught big cobia and a bunch of mangrove and yellow-tail snapper all on light spinning tackle. We fished the back country in Wes's Pathfinder and had lots of action with snook and jacks. It was a great few days and the weather was very good. Another excellent adventure.
