Another excellent day on the water.

I fished today with Anthony and Mark and we had a good day. Not hot action but action none the less. We had a nice bass between 20 and 25 pounds and a good keeper fluke about 3 pounds. The weather cooperated and so did the fish. Lots of small bluefish around today. Another excellent day on the water. Captain Al Lorenzetti

Capt. Al Lorenzetti's Ultimate Fluke and Flounder Rig
Captain Al Lorrenzetti of http://www.skimmeroutdoors.com/ shows you how to tie the ultimate fluke rig that will work for most anything that swims. This rig is a killer on summer flounder, weakfish small bass and more. Buy the components yourself or purchase the kit from Trophy Tackle with the link below. http://www.tunafishtackle.com/capt-al-lorenzettis-three-way-fluke-rig-kit-1140p/ I fished today with Karen, Ivan, Steve and Ken. We all had a good time catching big bluefish on both live bait and light spinning tackle. It was Karen's first ever bluefish and she had a ball. By the end of the day everyone mastered the art of throwing a plug with light tackle and all connected with big fish. This crew loves to eat bluefish and also were going to smoke some. I have has smoked bluefish and it is very good.
It was pretty wild sometimes with two or three fish hooked up at the same time but we got it done with no broken lines and no hooks stuck in bad places. It was a fun day on the water with a real good crew. Captain Al Lorenzetti I fished today with Kevin, Buddy and Bill. We tried for big bass with live bait but did not connect. We had small bass beat up the bait but no hook-ups. Bluefish were the story today with fish from 8 to 14 pounds on both live bait and most on plugs using heavy then light spinning gear. It was a blast with fish really beating it up and tackle busting. One big fish ate a big Danny Plug almost all the way in as you will see in the photo. I had to take it home and dissect the fish to get my plug back.
The crew had a good time and it was the nicest day weather wish this whole spring. I think the big bass will be here very soon. Captain Al Lorenzetti I had the opportunity to work with my new 9 foot Cousins SU90M1A blank spinning rod made by Steve Petri and I am amazed at how great it is. It throws a Danny plug fifteen yards further than my favorite Lamiglas rod. I think the 50 mm first guide and placement made a difference and also the rigidity of the blank but yet it is still soft. The heat shrink finish is easy to grip and butt length is just right for fishing from a boat. I finished it with a Penn Battle II 6000 and am not entirely happy with it as I would have preferred a 7000 which they no longer make. My question is why? The 6000 is a tad small and the 8000 is to big and heavy for this rod. I fished it and the 6000 was OK but lost something on the speed of retrieve and smaller handle. Come on Penn make the 7000 again. Anyway, Great rod and great reel except for lack of 7000 size,
I have posted a photo of the butt section and reel as rod shots suck. When you try to shoot the whole rod you really can't see anything close enough to know what you are looking at. http://www.tunafishtackle.com/safety-lines-179c/ http://www.tunafishtackle.com/default.aspx While most striper tournaments occur in the fall Suffolk Marine Anglers has been holding their competition in the month of June for last seven years. The excitement begins with a shotgun start 6:00 am on Sunday June 5th 2016 from the Babylon Village Dock. Boundaries are from Moriches inlet to East Rockaway (Debs) inlet and participants must weigh their catch in by 3:30pm. Last year fisherman’s competed for nearly $20,000 dollars in prize money. Once again money will be raised for Hospice Care Network, a great non profit close to many of the anglers hearts.
There will also be a catch and release category The winner will receive a prize for the largest in length released striped bass. There are also many other chances to cash in, including a slot fish category, Calcuta blue fish category and a mystery fish. The captains meeting will be held at Miller’s Ale House in Deer Park at Thursday June 2nd 7:30pm. Thousands of dollars in prizes from local and national sponsors will be raffled off at the meeting along with a Chinese auction. will be held More information is available from the www.suffolkmarineanglers.com 631-669-0907 Steve Petri is one of the best custom rod builders in the Northeast. I have known Steve for many years and in fact Tim Smith produced a great instructional rod building video with him a number of years ago. I have a 9 foot Lamiglas rod that I love and wanted another similar rod as a back up and actually as another great toy. I talked to Steve about it and he suggested a blank made by "Cousins" rod building in Hunting Beach California. I checked out two blanks and found that the Medium (M) was almost a perfect match to my Lamiglas. The Light (L) blank was too soft in the tip. I brought Steve my Lamiglas rod for comparison for the build as I wanted the exact butt length and butt construction. I fish from a boat and therefore a long butt is not well suited for this situation as it would be when fishing from the surf. 9 foot is long on a boat and the shorter butt makes it much easier to maneuver around the console and also gives me more forward section for greater casting distance. Cousins rod company worked with Steve to produce rods more suited for the East Coast as compared to the West Coast where ultra fast action blanks are favored. These blanks have heavy butt sections and very tapered and limber tip sections for the ultra fast action. East Coast anglers myself included prefer a more gradual taper and stiffer tip section for a moderate to fast rated action. Cousins is owned by the previous owner of Seeker rods and so there is a lot of experience at the helm of the company.
Below are a few shots of Steve construction the butt section of the rod applying an under-wrap of cork tape and then covering it with shrink tubing, and securing the reel seat into position. The rod should be ready in a few days and I can't wait to get my hands on it. I will post a final report when the rod is complete and I have had a chance to put it through the paces.
