This morning we were greeted to a breathtaking sunrise and Eggs Benedict. It's Super bowl Sunday and Football is the last thing on these anglers mind. As we work our way down the Baja peninsular the deckhands and mates are busy with more tackle preparation and rig tying. Basil Pappas is co charter master on this trip and owner of BHP Tackle which specializes in wind-on leaders, top shots and hollow core spectra. He's putting the finishing touches of a spliced end loop. If you've ever wanted to take a trip like this but intimidated by all the tackle and rigging, no worries the crew is always there to help. Chef Jason had a special surprise for today, a full blown tailgate party with all the food you would expect for the big day. He also organized the traditional Superbowl pool. The Excel has two large flat screens and satellite TV so everyone on board will be watching the big game. Three hours before kick off and we just passed the San Benito Islands, almost half way to Cabo now. Check back tomorrow to see who was the big winner in the football pool. We awoke in San Diego to a crystal clear morning and no wind. The anglers for the first leg of the trip gathered at fisherman's landing where they checked in and the last of their personal gear was stowed aboard the Excel. We cast off at 830am and headed to our first destination, the bait barge. These long range fishing boats require a tremendous amount of bait and can take several hours to fill their live wells. Today we loaded up on sardines and mackerel. These floating bait pens are located just inside the harbor making it convenient when headed out to fish. The excel will load up with nearly a ton of bait or about seven hundred scoops. The barges are not only popular with fishermen but also with Sea lions, Pelicans and Cormorants. These opportunists compete for the bait that doesn't make it to the well. After the wells were topped off we headed out the harbor past Point Loma on a southerly course to Cabo San Lucas. |
