Today I fished with my pal Kevin Ryan and Tim C. Smith joined us for a video shoot on plugging and jigging striped bass. The bite has been great and the weather window looked good to do a video shoot so we went for it. In the early morning the jigging was hot in 40 to 50 feet of water east of Ocean Beach and we hooked up a bunch of fish or should I say Kevin did as I was trying out a new jig that didn't work too well. Kevin had 7 fish to my none. About a hundred boats motored into the area and put the fish down by 9 am. We then moved inshore just behind the breakers for some fantastic plug action. Gibbs Danny plugs in yellow were getting mauled by nice fish. We had doubles and fish taking the plug at the boat and running wild. The total for the day was probably 10 fish on jigs and 30 on plugs and a bunch of big bluefish is the mix. Tim will be posting some video of the action in the near future and you will see it on our YouTube Skimmeroutdoors channel to which I hope you subscribe. These video segments will focus on how to be most successful while using jigs and plugs including specific angling and tackle tips. It was a really spectacular day with good friends aboard and lots of fishing action. Captain Al Lorenzetti 10/29/2013 Today I fished with Jeff Sussman and his sister Linda. We had a good time catching striped bass on plugs, jigs and live bait. We started with plugs along the beach where the bass were busting water in 10 feet. We then ran to the jigging grounds and caught a few more fish and decided to try live bait just for fun and to do something different. I ran into the back country and we connected with bass on live spot. It was a really good day and the weather turned out just beautiful. Another excellent day on the water with a good crew. Captain Al Lorenzetti P.S. one year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy and I had a good day not a miserable day. 10/28/2013 I fished today with Steve, Max and Anthony and we had a great day of jigging striped bass in the ocean. Max is working a big fish on light spin tackle and having some fun. SPECIAL NOTE ON THIS DAY IS THAT COPPER AND GOLD JIGS OUTFISHED SILVER BY TWO TO ONE AT LEAST! We had non-stop action with over 30 fish to the mid 30 pound range. It was a blitz at times with fish breaking all around the boat and three fish on at a time. The crazy west wind started again and the ocean kicked up so we had to cut it a little short and head back to the inlet before it got any worse. It was a good move as it came up even harder later in the day. A really great day of fishing and another excellent day on the water. Captain Al Lorenzetti 10/25/2013 today I fished with Vinny Afflixio and his friend Tony (left to right). I have known Vinny for many years always seeing him on the water and saying hello but never fishing with him. His wife bought him the trip with me as a birthday gift so I finally got to fish with Vinny and also got to meet his good friend Tony. They are good fishermen and prevailed on a pretty tough fishing day. We started out east of the inlet where the fish were yesterday and there was lots of bird action but no fish. We decided to head west and it was the right move. We had a good day working west and chasing striped bass in a pretty tough ocean again. The fishing moved to the west off Tobay and the fish were moving fast. We jigged up about 8 or 10 fish before calling it a day. Another excellent day on the water and a good crew. Captain Al Lorenzetti 10/24/2013 Today I fished with Chris, Steve and John (left to right) and we had a great day of striped bass fishing under rough ocean conditions. This is a tough crew and ready to fish and they do it well. We had about 15 bass at least to about 32 pounds and a bunch of huge bluefish. Hammered jigs worked best. Another great day on the water. Captain Al Lorenzetti 10/23/2013 Today I did a little reconnaissance on the inside grounds. I found shad bait and caught a couple of fish on them. I then did the plugging act and caught a couple of fish on the Gibbs Yellow Danny plug up to 23 pounds. It is getting interesting on the inside. When the jig bite ends you have to know what else to do. Captain Al Lorenzetti 10/21/2013 I fished today with Frank Mule and Nicky Polanco. We had a great day of fishing with bass in the upper 20's to 30 pounds. The fish were in deep water. There were huge schools of big bluefish just east of the inlet today. Frankie had such a run off he "smoked his thumb" trying to get it under control. I smelled the flesh burning and Nicky couldn't stop laughing. Another great day on the water. Captain Al Lorenzetti 10/19/2013 I fished today with Mark Epstein out of Saltaire and Rich out of Kismet. We had a great day of striped bass fishing in the ocean east of the inlet. There were a ton of big Yellow Eye monster bluefish mixed in and creating havoc on our terminal tackle but the big bass were mixed in and we caught real well Here is Mark and Rich with the 38 pound fish Rich took on a two ounce Ava jig. We also caught well on the "Savage" sand eels and pink Shimano Wax Wing. The Wax Wing worked very well when the fish were on the top. We probably had over 15 bass and 10 big gorillagators with a bunch of missed, broken off and you name it. It was great fishing and you didn't have to be where the birds were. Another very great day on the water doing what I love so much. Captain Al Lorenzetti 10/17/2013 Today I fished with Mike Montermarano and his brother Joe. We had a great time jigging the bass east of the inlet. We had at least 15 fish up to 30 pounds. Here is Mike with a nice fish we kept for the table. Joe and Mike with a big fish at 30 pounds. We also kept this fish which was filled with two whole bunker and sand eels. It was an exciting day and this trip was a gift to Mike from his wife for his birthday. I was very happy it worked out well. Below is a little video of a double hook up by the two brothers. I also want to mention that big "Savage" brand sand eel with a Red Gill sand eel teaser worked great on the fish. We also caught on top of the water column with a Shimano Wax Wing in pink. Another great day on the water. Captain Al Lorenzetti |
