Striped Bass caught on plugs Fire Island New York

Today I fished with Walter, Jim and James (right to left) on a cold but calm day.

Everything was ice in the morning but it soon thawed out and warmed up. The fishing was pretty tough for a while but then I found a spot where some fish were holed up.

We worked the yellow Danny plugs in large medium and small sizes and hooked up about a dozen fish with lots of other strikes and rises. The biggest fish was about 20 pounds.

All were released except three good eating fish, one for each man.

It was a great day on the water with a great crew. Everyone had a good time.

Striped Bass caught on live bait Fire Island Inlet

Today I fished with Rich Nelson pictured here and his good buddy JB Deerin shown below.

We had horrible fishing conditions today. Rain then wind and no bait to be found inside.

We tried plugs today but that didn't work out either so we went to my stash of live bunker and found some fish.

Here is JB with a nice 28 pounds fish taken on a live bunker.

It was a good day regardless of the weather and certainly a memorable one.

I just love my new Aqua Skins rain gear. It kept me warm and dry and the best part is the bibs have a waterproof zipper.

I fished today with Fred McKibben and his buddy Scott. We had a great day with at least 8 or 10 fish to over 30 pounds on both bait and plugs.

Here is Scott with a nice 30 pound fish and he also caught his first fish on a plug today.

Fred and Scott back at the dock with a couple of nice fish for the table. We left the fish biting and threw back a bunch.

Another excellent day on the water with a great crew. Fred and I go back a long way and it was fun to fish with him again plus he always brings a super lunch.

Here is the crew with a beautiful 38 pound bass taken  on a Gibbs Yellow Danny plug.

The fish really slammed the plug and fought hard. Scott did a great job of working the fish to the boat under tough wind and tide conditions.

A great start to our day.

Here is the days catch and it was a good one. On the left is Jason with his 27 pound fish taken on live bait. This was a short but very bulky monster shoulder fish. Tough fighter as well. On the right is Justin with his 30 pound fish also taken on bait. An excellent fish and another great fight with all the wind against tide. And then there is the dad Scott with a beautiful 38 pound fish he caught on a plug.

We had 6 fish with two on bait and four on plugs and missed a few more.  It was good action and we set some free.

This was a memorable day of fishing under tough conditions.

Another excellent day with a great crew.

I fished today with Rich Nelson Jr, his son James pictured here, and his dad Rich Senior.

We worked hard to catch bass in very tough windy conditions.

James boated this 20 pound bass and what was amazing was the fish had a rock the size of  my fish in his gut. James is holding it in his left hand.

I have heard stories about bass eating rocks to give them stability in stormy weather or accidentally eating one when rooting for crabs in the sand. This is the first time I have personally seen it in thousands of bass that I have caught. I guess this was a true "Rockfish".

An interesting day on the water.

Monster blues on bunker

I fished today with a great crew. From left to right Amy, Linus, Tom, Marty and Nina.

We had some fast and furious action with huge bluefish on the bunker pods in the inlet.

Everyone took a turn on the rod and we kept a couple of fish for the table. When I keep blues to eat I immediately bleed them and get them on ice. A lot of people don't like to eat bluefish but that is because they don't handle them right after they are caught and/or are not such good cooks.

They are excellent eating and this crew will have some fun with that.

It was a beautiful day on the water with a great family. Another day on the water worth remembering.

Today I fished with Bob Himmelreich, Barbara and Debbie.

We had a good day of striped bass fishing with three fish up to 18 pounds. Fishing was a little tough with lots of bait but not many fish.

The weather was good and so was the company.

Another excellent day on the water.

Today I fished with my buddy Jim Conte and his brother John who is visiting from England.

We caught some fish and had fun. All fish today were in the mid teens and caught on plugs.

Bluefish are crazy now and we had one at 17 pounds.

Lots of bait around in inlet and ocean and with the bluefish you need all the bait you can find.

A fun day on the water.
