A super day of Fluke Fishing Southeast of Fire Island Inlet.

I fished today with Ray Bartlet and George Yurcak on Ray's boat. We headed to the ocean for a day of fluke fishing and it turned out to be a banner day.

Here is Ray loading up ice for the trip from his very own bulk ice maker in his Man Cave.

We really needed the ice.

On the way to the fluke grounds we found a massive school of bunker. We fished it and I shot some underwater video of the encounter with my Go Pro camera. The footage appears below in the next two frames. which appears below. It was not striped bass pushing the school but brown sharks. Ray hooked into one of them and we all had a good time watching. The shots of the bunker school are pretty cool.

Fishing near us was Jimmy Hahn, the manager of the Riverview Restaurant. Jimmy is a great fisherman and today he proved it with this beautiful 12 pound fluke.

Picture
We had a great day with a limit of fish up to 9 pounds. All the fish were big. Here I am with George in the background and Ray taking the photo.

A super excellent day on the water. Thank you Ray and George for a great time.

I fished today with Doug Modico and his kids Jackson, Maggie and Sam (left to right).

We had a good day of fishing with beautiful weather and some fish. We caught fluke, bluefish and blowfish. The fluke fishing was hot but not many keepers but a lot of fish.

Everyone had a good time.

Another excellent day on the water.

I fished today with Matt and his son Luke and Luke's buddies. The crew goes from left to right and we have Jarrett, Owen, Matt, Stokley and Luke.

We caught a lot of fluke in the bay with one 5.5 pound keeper and lost another keeper at the boat. We also had a few small bluefish.

The guys fished hard all morning and had a great time.

Bucktails and gulp worked just great today. Fishing was good from Captree it the inlet on the south side.

We also caught a northern stargazer electric fish and hooked a big ray.

Another excellent day on the water with a good crew.

Nicky's on the Bay, Bayshore Marina, Bayshore, NY

Today my girlfriend Lenie, her daughter April and April's two daughters Bianca and Paulina had probably the best seafood dinner that we have ever had.

We dined at Nicky's on the Bay in Bayshore. What a beautiful day and the food and service could not have been better. Hayley in the background was our waitress and she did an incredible job with the adults and with the kids.

We had three orders of Yellowfin Tuna encrusted in black and white sesame seeds and done perfectly with pink in the middle. The tuna was fresh bought the day before and you could tell it was the best. We all cleaned our plates including the kids.

As an appetizer we had top neck clams and oysters on the half shell. I have been to many other seafood restaurants and very often the clams and especially oysters are macerated by the shucker , old and just poor. These oysters and clams were fresh and succulent and the cocktail sauce and lemon were just right.

It could have not been better.

If you go to Nicky's tell them Captain Al sent you and you will not be disappointed.

This is the place to go for the best seafood.

Here is Matt the head chef at Nicky's and Nicky himself on the right showing his pride in the best chef on the South Shore of Long Island.

If you want a great seafood dinner (traditional dishes also) the Nicky's on the Bay is the place to go.

Slips available for boats or come by car. Ten dollar parking fee will be refunded when you validate your check with the waitress so parking costs nothing.

Today was another great day fishing with Stuyvesant and friends Dave and Charles (right, left and center).

We had 8 striped bass to 40 pounds again on the bunker pods.

We kept 3 for eating and released the rest. We let the big ones go as they were in great shape.

Here is Charles with a 40 pound fish at boat side.

Dave with a nice upper 30's striper.

Another great day on the water with a great crew.

We also did a little fluke fishing and had a 6.5 pound fish to round out the day.

Bunker Pods

Today I fished with Stuyvesant Pierrepont and Bo. We had an excellent day of striped bass fishing on the bunker pods.

We had a blast catching 10 stripers up to 40 pounds on the bait. We released all but two that were hooked in the gills and bleeding badly. We would have released them all but that is how it goes sometimes. Here is Stuyv with a nice fish.

Picture
Stuyv working the fish on a conventional outfit. He is an excellent fisherman and can cast the conventional with the best. Lots of fun on a very light stick.

Picture
Bo with a nice 40 pound fish. He had a ball as we all did.

Fishing was not easy with lots of wind. You really had to work hard to get on the school and even to see them in all the white water.

Another excellent day on the water.

Today I fished with Rich Nelson, JB Deerin and their friend John.

We had a good day of striped bass fishing. It wasn't easy and we had to work hard for some fish.

We caught a few fish up to 30 pounds doing just about everything I know to hook up.

Here are John and JB with a couple of the nice fish we had today.

Picture
John with his nice 30 pound fish. Good going John.

We had to deal with the elements today. It started out nice and calm with light northwest winds but then the fan turned on and it made fishing tough.

We did all right considering the conditions and what can I say but it was another great day on the water.

I fished with Jim and Jamie Finnerty out of Seaview today. We worked the bay hard for a couple of keeper fluke and a bunch of small blues. We stayed mostly in the Back Bay areas as they had less slip gut weed than the inlet area.

We tried drifting live baits for bass around the inlet but didn't have any luck with that so we went back to fluke fishing to fin

Here is Jamie all smiles with a nice fluke.

Another great day on the water.

I fished today with Kevin Ryan. We had a good day of bass fishing with 8 fish to 32 pounds.

Fishing has been a little picky with a few fish each day but hard to come by. I have had to work hard to put fish in the box but today was much better.

I expect this fishing to last a couple of weeks longer as long as the bait stays around.

Another excellent day on the water.

I fished with George and Tim Smith shooting video for a Mercury Marine Pro Staff production and for "The Fisherman" magazine. It was a spectacular day with over 30 bass to 46 pounds. More action and underwater footage to come!
Raw footage of some of the underwater action from today
