8/7/2012 I fished today with Brad Brown, Ginny and Rob (center, right and left) out of Saltaire. We had a good day of fishing with a nice catch of seabass and fluke. Fluke fishing was better in the inlet than it was in the ocean. We had four keeper fluke and about a dozen legal size seabass. The seabass were caught in the ocean on a little piece that if found. We probably caught 40 or 50 fluke mostly shorts but lots of action. Another excellent day on the water with good people. Captain Al Lorenzetti I finished my work early today and decided to fish the top of the tide for Fluke. As soon as the rig hit the bottom I had a fish on the trailing hook. I fished just north of the bar in front of the coast guard station in the clean water and I guess a new body of fish moved inside the bay. I used Captain Al's Fluke rig tipped with chartreuse 4" swimming mullet gulp. Check out the video below to see how to tie the rig. In an hour and a half I had 20 fluke with two of them being keepers. Tim C. Smith 5/8/2012 I did some exploring today. Caught one bass about 10 pounds on a plug. No bunker seen anywhere. Tried some fluke fishing and was rewarded with a limit of nice fish. The one on the top left of the photo is just under 5 pounds. The two on the right would not be keepers last year but made the 19.5 inch limit for the current year. Time for another fish fry for the family. All fish caught on Spro bucktails with "Gulp" Another great day on the water. Captain Al Lorenzetti Big Fluke in the Bay I fished today with Norman and Julia of Queens, NY and Mark Epstein. We fished out of Saltaire and started the day with some fluke fishing. We caught some great fish and had a great time on the most beautiful of days. We had 8 keepers to 7 pounds and the rest were all good and over 3 pounds. All fish were on bucktails and Berkley Gulp. They were smashing the baits. Bass fishing is slow right now in our area with a fish here and there. We hunted for bass but came up empty. Lots of bait around and just waiting for the next body of fish to show up. It could be tomorrow I hope. There are bass schools at Debs Inlet and off New Jersey so any day it could happen with the bait living in our area. Another excellent day on the water. Captain Al Lorenzetti This is the rig that has worked real well on the Fluke. With no wind and the tide right where I like it (ebbing) I decided to take my wife out fishing for an hour or so. We fished the west end of the east west channel and within an hour we had 8 Fluke including a 22" keeper that I released. Spro Bucktail tipped with Gulp and a traditional Fluke rig with a 4" mullet curly tail was the key.
Tim C. Smith I received word that the fluke regulations for 2011 will be 3 fish per day at 20.5 inches which is better but the best news is that the season will run from May 1 to September 30th. Personally I would have liked to see a 19.5 size fish in there somewhere, maybe one per day per angler slot size but this is certainly better by far than last year. The longer season is a real plus for the East end where they have a good run of big fish early and also a plus for Fire Island where the big fish show in the ocean in September. At least there will be something else besides striped bass to fish for in September and take some of the pressure off them.
