Skimmer Fishing Report

I fished today with Kevin Ryan and John B. and we had a good time.

We had fish on live bait early and then fished the bunker pods but that was slow in later morning.

We moved around and found a hot spot and had a blast with about 15 fish up to 30 pounds.

We did a little plugging and had a few fish to finish out the day.

The weather was beautiful and the water looks like the Caribbean Sea.

Another excellent day on the water. Below is some underwater video of a bass taken on a plug.

First Annual Suffolk Marine Striped Bass Tournament

I fished today with George Yurcak and Jeff Butta in the First Annual Suffolk Marine Angler's Spring Striped Bass Tournament.

We won it with George's beautiful 43.95 pound striped bass. We caught it late in the day with just enough time to make weigh-in. As George said it was a "Whistle" fish.

The fishing was a little tough today with all the boat traffic which sent the bass scattering but the bait is there and the fishing will be great for at least the next month. We are only at the beginning of the big run. We had fun and rocked to the music when times were tough. We never gave up and ran all over the place putting the baits in the right spot and eventually with some skill and a lot of luck landed on the winner. Sometimes it works. A 34 year old boat did it today.

The Tournament was a great success thanks to Suffolk Marine and Miller's Ale House who sponsored the event. All went smoothly with 23 boats fishing. The Captain's Meeting at Miller's on June 1st was a great night with super raffle prizes from Millers, West Marine, and Suffolk Marine Angler's. The Awards Barbecue this afternoon was great with Carlos cooking up a storm. Many great anglers fished hard today with varied success but all did their best. Thanks to all of you for being a part of a really good day.

Everyone was pleased with the event and and it was a great success.

We are having a summer fluke contest and another bass contest in the fall. Once again they will be sponsored by Suffolk Marine Anglers and Miller's Ale House.

Congratulations George.

P.S. I have Thursday and Friday open and the fishing is great so if you want to land a big one email me at captal@skimmeroutdoors.com.

Kathy thought she would like a photo with the fish. I'm not sure who is bigger. Nice photo Kath.

Today was one of the best bass fishing days ever. I fished with my buddy Rich Santos and his son Nick who is home for a break from his Coast Guard duties in Boston.

We found bunker pods with loads of bass under them west of Fire Island inlet. We caught over 30 stripers from 25 to 42 pounds with most fish between 35 and 42 pounds.

Also in on the action was Ray Bartlett and his pal here displaying a nice 45 pound striped bass which was being weighed in for a tournament. George Yurcak was also fishing the area. It was only our three boats and all the big striped bass you could catch.

We released all the fish keeping just two for the dinner table. Here is Rich releasing a 40 pound fish.

Rich weighing a 38 pound fish before release and Nick fighting another fish. We actually had three fish on at the time. Mine was on a stick I put in a rod holder so I could take the photo.

I fished with George Yurcak today on his boat. We had a good day of bass fishing with fish up to 38 pounds. We had to fight some fierce wind but still had a good time.  Here is George with his big one of the day. Another great day on the water.
