Striped bass fishing, live bait, Fire Island

I fished today with Mark Epstein and his pal Ken ( right to left) out of Saltaire.

We had a good day of striped bass fishing. Bait was tough to get today but we prevailed catching a limit of bass to 25 pounds and bluefish.

It was a beautiful day, probably one of the best days this spring.

Good friends, good weather and good fishing makes for another great day on the water.

I fished today with Nick Santos who is on leave from the Coast Guard and heading to Alaska for a two year stint.

We had a great morning of bass fishing. We netted a bunch of bait and fished them in the inlet.

We had nice fish to over 30 pounds.

The action is heating up. Good bass fishing for the next month.

Another great day on the water.

I fished today with Jeff Miller and his buddy Kevin (left to right),

We had a good day of bass fishing. We had to work hard for some fish but it payed off late in the day. Caught all fish on live bunker.

Netted bait in the ocean and fished them in the inlet.

Jeff and Kevin were troopers and the enthusiasm lasted all day. We had some slow periods but they prevailed.

Another excellent day on the water.

Striped bass Fishing, Fire Island Inlet, New York

Today I fished with Jim Fudge and his two buddies Matt and Don (left to right).

We had to fight the weather as it was blowing hard from the east. We fished outgoing tide so the wind and current were going the same way which made it fishable. We caught some nice bass as a reward for our determination. The big fish was 30 pounds.

There was good action and the bluefish were beating us up but we pulled stripers from the crowd.

We cut the day short because when the tide turned to incoming it would not be a pretty sight.

Another great day on the water.

Today I fished on Carl Curcio's boat out of Oak Beach. His buddy Bill (on left) also joined us for the trip.

We did OK trying a few different things. We fished the pods with only bluefish. We trolled downriggers with no success. We then fished live bait and had some good action with some striped bass.

It was a good day with a good crew.

Another great day on the water.

I fished today with Jeff Salkin and his son Andre out of Saltaire.

We did a short morning trip and had some fun with bluefish and a nice striped bass.

This was Andre's first bass and he did a great job letting the fish run with the bait and setting the hook. He fought it to the boat and had a good time.

We had some rain but it didn't dampen our spirits.

Another great day on the water.

I fished today with Mike Lippman and his sons Sam and Max (right to left).

We had a good time with giant bluefish on the bunker pods and some nice striped bass.

Everyone had a good time as the weather cleaned up and the sun was shining and the bass were biting.

Another great day on the water with an excellent crew.

I fished today with Josh and Mike out of Saltaire.

We had a good half day of bass fishing. We had three fish on big yellow Gibbs Danny plugs and one on live bait. We missed a couple of other fish but the action was good and so was the company.

The weather could have been better with lots of fog but we still managed to make a good day of it.

Another excellent day on the water except for the fog.

Today I started my charter season with a good day.

I fished with Mark Epstein, Anthony and Dave (Center, left and right) out of Saltaire.

We had fun with a nice catch of striped bass. We ended up with 5 fish to 23 pounds and some misses and good action.

Things are starting to heat up on the bass front.

We all had a good time and the weather cooperated. Much better day than forecast.

Another excellent day on the water.

Super new Striped fishing outfit, good fishing report, Trophy Tackle Seminar Series

This might be my earliest fishing report for a fishing season. Codfish caught on clam from the surf at field 2 off Moses, boat loaded up on mackerel in 30 feet of water south of Fire Island Inlet and fluke caught in spearing seine nets in the Great South Bay off Babylon.

I think this is going to be the earliest season ever. The water temperature is in the 50's and bait is abundant. Get your boat in the water and let's go fishing!

Also wanted to mention that I purchased what I think is going to be one of my favorite striped bass live bait and conventional plugging outfits.  John Jr. At Trophy Tackle worked with me to put this outfit together. This outfit consists of an Accurate Boss 400 with cast control and an Okuma Musky rod EVX-C-761H 7'6'rod with cork grips and rated 30 to 65 pounds. I will load it with 25 pound test Ande Hi-Vis line and am sure I will love it. I hate it when a good saltwater rod is named after a freshwater fish but that's the way it is. It should be called the Captain Al Lorenzetti Great South Bay Striped Bass rod. This rod is very reasonable at about $109 and the Accurate is the usual at about $400. So for $500 you can own one of the hottest new striped bass outfits in the country.

This outfit promises to be one of the best and I will let you know how it performs.

Make sure to sign up for the Trophy Tackle Seminar Series.
