11/19-21/2004

On Friday 11/19 I fished a few hours with Scott Leonard and Mike Andriani of Augie's Custom Tackle of Babylon.  We had four fish to 20 pounds on big plugs. We also dropped two fish on live bait.

I decided that I had enough of the fishing and it is getting too spotty to take people out fishing.  There might still be a good bite for a couple of weeks but I have had a good season and am ready for a change of pace.

Duck season opened on 11/20 and I gunned the Peconic club with Jim Conte and Joe Cassiani.  Again on 11/21 I gunned the Peconic Club with Jim Conte.  We had two good shoots.

From here on in until I go to Florida, I will be posting hunting reports at http://www.skimmeroutdoors.com/ Check out the reports if you like to hunt.  If I do any more fishing, I will post the report to this page.

I fished with Joe Tropia today and we had a great day of fishing.  We found bait and fished them on the outside and the inside as I did yesterday.  We ended up with at least 10 fish with a couple about 25 pounds or maybe a little better.  We landed on a real good bunch of big fish at one point and banged about five out of that group.  It was a fun day and the weather was beautiful.  It was a pleasure to fish with Joe.  Being a fellow boatman he did a lot of the work for me and that saved time which translated into more fish.  Overall it was a great day on the water.

Today I fished with Joe Devito, his son Joey and his buddy Don.  We had a good day of fishing.
We found some good live bait and fished both outside and inside.  We had 2 fish on the outside and dropped a good one.  We had 6 more fish on the inside and dropped a couple of others.  It was a beautiful day with good fishing and good company.  Everyone caught fish.

Today I fished with Joe Garneau and his friend Jim.  It was a very tough weather day with a 25 knot wind right out of the west.  There was bait around but it was difficult to fish the pods with the wind blowing you away from them in just a few seconds.  On the flood the wind was with the current and we were flying on the drift, on the ebb with wind against current we drifted but had heavy wave action.  We caught a fish and dropped a couple of others.  We cut it short and made it a half-day.  Spirits were still high when we returned so all ended well.

I thought I would spend the day quietly in my home office editing the new "Live Bait Striped Bass" DVD but then the phone rang, It was my friend Mike. Mike had the day off and wanted to go fishing, I told him I really have to stay here and get some work done. About 10 minutes later the phone rang again,  it was Al. "Hey Tim you have to get out here there are Bunker schools all over with big Bass on them", after thinking about it for about 2 seconds I called mike back and we were on our way. Mike caught his fist Bass ever and we had a great time working the schools all day long. Later in the day  I talked to Al and he had the nerve to ask "how is the new DVD coming along?"

I fished with John Dall today.  It was a memorable experience.  There were bunker schools everywhere in the bay and inlet.  It was very cold but the winds were calm and the fishing was great.  We netted a bunch of bait and fished them and we also snagged and fished as we drifted with the schools.  We hit a good pod and took about 8 bass out of it.  Things slowed down shortly after and we moved to fish some of the other spots that produce fish and sure enough, they were there.  We had at least 12 fish for the day, maybe more.  We kept two fish of 27 and 31 pounds.  It was a spectacular sight to see so much life in the bay.  In the photos you will see the pods of bait.  One is a photo of the 31 pound fish about six feet down by the side of the boat.

Today I fished with Chris, John and Artie.  We had an excellent day of fishing.  The ocean was alive with fish today.  There were bait schools, birds working, blues and bass all over the place.  We started jigging the birds and caught a bunch of blues and school bass.  We then found bait pods and I netted a bunch.  We fished them and caught about 10 nice bass, all in the mid twenties to 30 pounds.  It was cold but no one seemed to mind when the fish were biting.

Just a note about the sighting of what I thought was a baby Pigmy Sperm Whale near the Coast Guard Station on 10/27/2004.  It was found washed up and dead along the shore between the Coast Guard Station and the Lighthouse on the bay side of Fire Island.  It was confirmed to be a baby Pigmy Sperm Whale by Okeanos.

My brother and I finally both had a free day to go Bass fishing. The morning was spectacular with no wind, warm air and great sunshine. The fishing on the other hand was a bit slow. I looked all morning and could not find bait so I had to use Eels. The water was still all churned up from the big blow the last couple of days. On our last drift I hooked up with a nice 23 pound Bass and I caught it on a Penn 940 (great fight). My brother went fishless but we had a great day.

Today I fished with a great bunch of guys.  Shurland Layne set up the date and he fished with his friend Mike and Mike's two boys Mike Jr. and Ryan.  The crew came well prepared for the day with boots, slickers and life jackets.  By the end of the day when the wind came howling out of the southwest, they needed all the rain gear.  We had a great day.  It started slow with only a couple of pick-ups on an outside wreck but then it got better.  Over the last two hours of the day we boated 5 bass up to about 23 pounds.  Everyone caught a fish and Shurland got two and dropped another.  Sometimes you just have to hang in there and wait for it to happen.

I fished today with Larry Opisso and his dad Larry Sr..  We had a great day of bass fishing with live bait.  We found the bait in the ocean and fished the pods.  It was wicked fishing with huge bluefish and really big bass.  I figure we caught 20 big blues and 15 or more bass into the low 30 pound range.  It was total mayhem with two or more fish on at one time.  The tackle was tested to the max.  All kinds of broken lines, leaders etc. but a hell of a lot of fun.  We left the fish biting in the rain and headed home to a warm house.  It was a great day.

I wanted to include this fishing report that I received from a fishing friend in Babylon.  He and his buddies took an incredible fly-fishing trip to Mongolia this past spring and they had a ball.

Al, On May30, 2004 I went on a fishing trip To Mongolia with two friends from Pine Hill NY, Robert and Jason Konefal. The trip was an incredible experience. We fished the Delger River and had a lot of success. The game fish we were after was the Tiamen. This fish is ferocious feeder and attacks both surface flies and streamers. When they hit a surface fly they come completely out of the water and jump two or three times as they make their run. We also had success catching lenok and grayling in the 12-20 in range. The Tiamen were caught on 9ft, 9wt rods and the lenok and grayling were caught using 5and 6wt tackle. The country at camp was magnificent and the river is crystal clear.
Traveling was somewhat difficult as it took almost 2.5 days to get to our camp, but once there it was more than worth while, For more info you can check out our guide's web site at http://www.fishmongolia.com.
       I hope this was helpful.

Sincerly,

Tom Mirabella

Today I fished with Tom, Bill and Ryan.  We had been blown out on a couple of earlier attempts to fish and finally got the trip in.  It was a good day of fishing for striped bass with live bait.  We got a good bunch of bait in the morning and fished all day.  We boated 6 fish up to 25 pounds and dropped a few others.  The weather was real nice, only a little breezy and the fishing was good.  It doesn't get much better.

Today I fished with Jim and his pal Bob.  We had a good day.  The bait was tough to get once again but when we got it we caught fish.  We ended up with 4 bass up to 25 pounds.  The weather could have been better with a lot of drizzle and light rain in the morning but then it eased up and the winds were light.   Another good day on the water.

Today I fished with Gary Arnold and his buddies Bob and Brian.  We worked hard to get some live bait and then fished them for striped bass.  We caught 4 fish up to 30 pounds.  We also dropped a few but had a great time.  Bob supplied a gourmet lunch and we all pigged out.  An enjoyable day of fishing.  Below is Brian, Bob with his 30 pound fish and Gary.

Today I fished with Billy Graham, his dad Bill and a friend Ed.  We drifted liver bait which was tough to catch.  The fishing was pretty hot and we caught some nice bass.  We also missed a bunch of fish.  We ended up with 4 nice fish to about 23 pounds and had a good day.  If we didn't miss any we would have had about 8 or 10.  It was pretty windy in the morning and then got real nice later on.  All seemed to have a good time.

I fished today with Gary Arnold and his good buddy Chris.  We caught some live bait which is getting tougher every day.  The fishing was good but it also has declined a little over the past few days.  We ended up with 4 bass, all in the mid twenties and dropped the best fish of the day right near the boat.  It was a 30 pounder at least and Chris was not happy about the loss.  Sorry, but not photos of today's fish.  We did have a good time however and that is the whole point of sporting activities.

Special note about this trip.  Today while fishing near the Coast Guard Station we saw an amazing sight.  What I believe to be a baby Pigmy Sperm Whale came right next to our boat.  Gary Arnold was able to touch it.  It had some scar marks on the head and may have been injured or disoriented but looked otherwise to be fine.  It was about 4 feet long and about 50 pounds.  It had a blunt head, short dorsal fin and black body.  I didn't have a chance to get a picture.  It was attracted to the boat like we were its mother.  It then took off heading east toward the lighthouse.  An amazing sight to say the least.

I fished with John Locurto and his pal Mike.  We had a good day.  Bait was a little tough to find today but we managed a good bunch.  We landed about 7 bass up to about 25 pounds.  We dropped a few etc. but overall it was good fishing.  Mike who is pretty new to this type of fishing landed two or three fish and he was very happy.  John Locurto is a great builder of custom rods.  He made me one as a gift, an 8 foot Lamiglas blank and real nice wraps.  I really like the rod and it is great on striped bass with live bait.  Thanks John.

Today was finally a comfortable day on the water.  I fished with Pete Pelling, Mike Faccibene and their buddy Pete.  We had a good time with the striped bass while drifting live bait.  We ended up with about 12 to 15 fish up to 25 pounds.  There was a lot of action with lots of run-offs, dropped fish and so on.  We all had a good time and some laughs.  It was a very good day.

I had the pleasure of fishing with Gary Arnold and his buddy Fred.  We had a good time catching a bunch of striped bass on live bait.  It was an interesting day with the bait fairly plentiful and lots of striped bass in the usual haunts.  A couple of hot spots that I fish were disappointing however and we used up a lot of time looking for a big fish in some of those spots.  We had a good time and is was a pleasant day even though the weather was a little raw.  There was certainly less wind than the last few days.  Below are pictures of Gary and Fred and Fred with his family and one of the striped bass we kept today.

I fished today with Mike McGrath and special guest Capt. Al who jump onto my boat because he had canceled his charter due to the tough weather conditions. We stayed warm and dry in my boat and spent the good part of the morning searching for Shad which finally showed and we loaded up on them. Al caught 1 nice bass on outgoing and Mike and I had some nice fish on the flood tide. Mike's fish tipped the scale at 33 pounds and was caught with a live Shad.

I fished today with John Locurto.  We had a really good day of bass fishing with live bait.  In the end the total was 15 fish up to about 34 pounds.  It was windy cold and raw but when the fishing is good you don't seem to mind too much.

I am alive and well.  I haven't updated the fishing reports for several reasons.  In the past month the weather has been so bad that I had to cancel a number of fishing trips.  I have fished several times but there was very little happening.  I struck out a couple of times, and caught a couple of fish on a few trips but had to work hard for them.  There is plenty of bait around but until last week there were very few striped bass.  As of last week things picked up.  There are fish around and a few big ones.  It is still not hot action but certainly worth fishing.  The last week however has had lots of heavy winds out of the east and has churned up the waters making things tough again.  That should change in the next couple of days with the wind going around to the north.  In addition to all that I mentioned, my mother passed away last month and I have lots of responsibilities in taking care of my father who is also very ill.  Some times you just have to do what is necessary and family comes first.

I fished today with Gary Arnold and his buddies John and Mike.  We found some live bait and fished it hard.  There was not much happening but we managed two nice bass between 20 and 25 pounds.  Once again the heave from the Hurricanes offshore made things unsettled.  The wind was only about 10 MPH but the ocean was a little choppy which made for tough conditions for finding and fishing the bait properly.  We did OK however and all were pleased.

I fished with Craig Georgi today.  We found plenty of bait and fished live ones for bass.  We had a good day and caught 5 bass up to 25 pounds.  It was my first trip in over two weeks and it was good to see that there are still some fish around.  My guess is that no fall run has begun yet and the fish that are around are local residents but there are a good number of them.

I was working once again with the boys of www.neangling.com and we had a great couple of days fishing New England. Monday we had an incredible bight of school Tuna East of Block Island  including Blue fin, Green Bonita and False Albacore. On Tuesday we fished Nantucket Sound for monster Sea bass. The second season starts airing October on Fox Sports New York on Saturday moorings 10am. For more info check out there website www.neangling.com

I fished with Dave Sneddon of Dunewood today.  We looked for bait schools but could not find any.  We caught a bunch of snappers and drifted them on the inside.  We caught a few big bluefish and one striped bass about 20 pounds.  It was a beautiful day again but the swell is starting to build from Hurricane Frances.

I fished with Brad Brown of Saltaire today.  We fished the bunker schools outside the inlet.  We caught big bluefish all day.  We also hooked up with a nice striped bass of about 20 pounds.  On the way home we spotted some false albacore chasing bait and Brad hooked up with one on light spinning tackle.  It was a mixed bag for the day and it was beautiful weather.

Today I fished with Joel and his children Aaron, Benjamin and Sidney of Seaview.  We had a blast catching a pile of snappers.  The kids really got good at casting and improved their techniques.  We then went bottom fishing and caught a bunch of small porgies and seabass.  Lastly, we tried to drift live bait for bigger fish but struck out on that attempt.  It was a beautiful day and the kids had a lot of fun.

I fished today with Gene, Peter and Mark of Saltaire.  We fished the schools of bait and had a good time with big bluefish and a couple of nice striped bass.  The bass weighed 30 and 22 pounds.  It was a nice flat ocean and all had a good time.  A good half day of fishing fun.

I fished with Brad Brown today.  We hit the bait schools and had a blast with big bluefish.  They were jumping like tarpon.  We tried fluke fishing but it was a bust today.  We went back to the bait schools for more fun and beat on them pretty good.

I fished today with David Rappaport and his kids, Jordan, Benjamin, Mark, and Jonathan.  We fished the bait schools and caught big slammer blues.  We then did a little fluke fishing in the ocean and caught a couple of keepers.  To mix the day up we then caught some porgies and finished up with a snapper bonanza at Captree.  Everyone had a good time.

I fished today with George, Harry and Jackie.  We worked over the bait schools but only hooked up with big bluefish.  We pulled the hook on a good fish but never got to see it.  It may have been a bass because the leader was not chaffed and it was running a good amount of line.  Some days you eat the fish and other days they eat you.  That's fishing.

I fished with Ed and Steve Werblow and their dad Bernie out of Seaview.  We had a good time catching big bluefish on live bait.  We were hoping for big weakfish but had no luck with them.  The bluefish were tough and all had a good time.

I fished with my friend Katy of Hampton Bays on her 17' Boston Whaler. We had a nice mixed bag of fish including Blues, Sea bass and Scup. Katy has a boat detailing business in Hampton Bays and her specialty is sport fishing boats so if you keep your boat in the Hampton bays area contact her (Katy Hine) and make your boat look like new again.

Things picked up today.  I fished with Lynn and a good bunch of teenagers both boys and girls, her and her sisters kids from Fair Harbor.  We caught about 15 big slammer blues and had bad luck with the bass.  We had two bass near the boat.  One pulled the hook about 20 feet from the boat and the other broke a line right at the boat.  Both fish were over 20 pounds.  We also had about a 40 pound bass swim right up to the boat chasing a bait.  It was pretty hot action and it looks like the bass are back and on the schools of bait.  It should be good fishing as long as the weather holds.  We kept one big bluefish.  Aaron is holding the fish in the photo.

8/9 - 8/14/2004

I fished several days in this period.  The fishing was slow and the weather was not good.  We caught big bluefish on live bait and large bluefish.  Porgy fishing was slow and so was the fluke fishing.  We caught a few fish each day and had some fun doing it.  I hope things pick up.

8/7/2004

Today I fished with Steve and his son Adam.  Adam is getting married tomorrow and his wedding present from me was a couple of nice bass in the mid 20 pound range.  Today there was even less bait than yesterday but we managed pretty well.  I netted a bunch of bait and fished a couple of small patches of bait away from the other boats.  It doesn't last long however because as soon as I move, a bunch of other boats mug me and scare off the bait and the bass.  It's a free ocean and I really don't mind it too much but some guys are ridiculous about it.  It was and excellent day however and both Steve and Adam hooked up with nice fish and had a good time.

I fished with Brad Brown and his friends, Willie and Ryan.  We found the bait but not a lot.  There were only a few schools of bait and boats all on top of one another trying to get into the school.  I netted a bunch and worked different areas by myself.  We hooked up with a few fish and boated one about 22 pounds.  We also dropped a couple at the boat and missed a few others.  We weren't lucky but did score pretty well on a slow day.

I fished with John Dall today.  It was another super day of bass fishing.  We got on the bait early and fished a half-day.  It was a blast catching about 15 bass up to almost 30 pounds and some bluefish.  The ocean was beautiful but with a heave working from the Hurricane to our south.

Today was a super day of fishing.  I fished with Brad Brown, Lloyd Taft and Stanley Tucci.  We had a celebrity aboard today,  Stanley is a well known actor.  He played the part of Frank Nitty in "Road to Perdition".  Well today Stanley and everyone else played the role of hot shot fisherman.  We beat up on the big bass and bluefish.  The bait schools were there again and we fished them hard.  By the end of the day we boated about 25 bass up to 35 pounds and about 10 big bluefish.  It was a real blast.  Needless to say everyone had a good time.  We were beat at the end of the day.  The fishing just doesn't get better.

I had a great day fishing with my parents Claudia and Frank and thanks to Al's information I put them right on the fish. The bait was so tightly packed on the surface that there fins were sticking out of the water I guess they had no place to hide from the Bass and blues below. I lost count of the bass we caught but I can tell you the largest was 28 lbs.

The bait was there and so were the bass.  I beat on the fish today.  Schools of bunker with bass and huge bluefish under them was the number for the day.  I caught about 20 bass up to about 35 pounds.  I quit when I couldn't fish any more.  I got tired and my back started to hurt.  Most fish were 22 to 28 pounds with a few bigger and some smaller.  It was stupid fishing, a  bass on and twenty fish following it to the boat.

Friends from the Island of Bermuda (Donald and Veronica) have been up visiting with  there son Matthew. He wanted to kill some time and try fishing in the canal. Matthew a native Bermudian use the tried and true method of "The Hand Line". Much to our surprise he caught 2 Hugh Eels with the largest being 2 lbs. Donald has invited Al and I to go Blue Marlin Fishing next month on his boat down in Bermuda. Donald is one of the best Marlin fisherman down in Bermuda and hopefully Al and I can make it happen.

Today I fished with Eric and Mack of Robbins Rest.  We fished for bass and headed into the ocean to look for the bait schools.  We didn't find any bait but did see acres of small bluefish just west of Fire Island Inlet.  We went back into the bay and fished for porgies.  We caught a bunch and then fished live bait for bass.  We hooked one bass that was between in the high teens but broke it off at the boat.  It wasn't the greatest of fishing days but the weather was good and it was a day of fishing, much better than working.

7/12/2004

I had the great opportunity today to be one of the cameraman shooting a shark show for  the NE Angling TV series up in Rhode Island. The guest for this episode was Captain Bill Brown of the Charter Boat "Billfish" out of Watch Hill, R.I.  Capt. Bill ran his boat 32 miles to the S.E. of Block Island before  setting in to chum for the toothy critters near the NW Corner of the Dump..

Bill had made a vague statement that, "There's a special reason why I've chosen this location to set up."   Well, coming from a mariner that's been in the charter industry for well over two decades and has put his customers into six state gamefish records and numerous tournament wins, that was more of a statement of fact than a  case of 'fish wishing.'

There was an abundance of 'life' in the form of stormy petrels, shearwater gulls, busting tuna, and a beautiful azure blue 66.8 degree water.   Needless to say that what we'd set sail for came calling.   A quick dip of the boatside rod signaled that a shark had taken the mackerel set down underneath  the boat.  Capt.  Rich grabbed the rod and setup on the fish.  Capt.  Andy was clearing the other rod when another bluedog grabbed his bait.   'Doubled up!" was the call but no sooner than that growl  was  uttered than the clicker on the third live-bait rod starting singing.  Capt.  Bill grabbed that wand and three good sized blue sharks were brought the hullside where they were quickly released.

After a short wait another bait was taken and another blue shark and was boated in short order  by Capt. Rich.

After taking a short lunch break, the reason why we had wanted to go angling with Capt. Bill came acalling.   As the stinger-rigged live bluefish bait was brought in to be checked, a whip-tail came thrashing out behind the soon-to-be doomed baitfish.

Capt.  Bill's one word statement said it all, "THRESHER!"   The clicker screamed as the fish was allowed to run with the bait.   It was plain to see that this was a big fish as the rod went into a near 180-degree bend as soon as he set up on it.

All the details from the discussion from the previous night's stay at Block Island's Springhouse came into play as Capt. Bill put the boots to the sizeable thresher and Capt. Andy handled the helm and Capt. Rich  SHOUTED out encouragement.    Thresher sharks are one tough adversary and this one proved to be no exception.   Quick runs and powerful dives are the trademarks of this specie, and this one followed that script.   A description of the  three breathtaking breaches of what looked like a nuclear sub on a power ascent simply transcends anything that can be put into words.

However, Capt. Bill whose customers have caught 53 threshers over 200-lb. knew exactly what to do with the two-speed reels and standup rod.   In the short span of 43 minutes, what was a truly HUGE fish was brought up to boatside before the flying gaff was employed to ensure that this trophy was subdued.   Bill's 16 year old mate and son, Patrick was dropped aboard the 24-ft. Edgewater to serve as wireman.  The gaff was sunk and fish was ours.

Capt. Kip Jenkins who had taken over the BILLFISH while Capt. Bill was aboard the Northeast Angling platform, also came over to lend the necessary muscle to haul the big  fish aboard.  After a photo opt, the boat was hooked up for the 34 mile run to Pt. Judith's Snug Harbor Marina where the fish was weighed in.   The digital scale settled at 480-lb.    At that point Capt. Bill's vague promise became clear.   He'd made a calculated decision based upon his vast vault of knowledge of sharking to put us on the right spot.

What had been an expected two day shoot was completed in six hours of shark catching, rather than just shark fishing.  That's the difference that Capt. Andy's and Capt. Rich's guest anglers have in common.   Not only are they great fishermen, they're even better people and instructors.

As I close, this episode will simply blow viewers away when it makes its way to the TV screen.
No one has taken the footage of threshers that we'd captured and the final product will knock the socks off those fortunate enough to see what was simply an awesome day of sharking in the near coastal waters that abut the southern Rhode Island coastline.
Tight lines and good fishing.

(If you haven't guessed, Capt. Bill also is a well known outdoor writer who gave me more than a little help in writing this week's report.)

Mike McGrath and I ran about 12 miles South of the inlet and caught a Blue Shark and a small Mako on a 20 lb custom Augies rod. Both sharks where released unharmed.

I fished with David and his children Naomi and Ezra of Seaview.  We had a good time bottom fishing and catching a lot of fish.  We had a good bunch of big triggerfish and porgies.  The action was good and the kids had a lot of fun.  It was also a beautiful day to be on the water.

I fished today on an exploratory trip.  I found the bait and the bass were on them.  I caught about 15 fish up into the upper 20's but no big ones.  It was a beautiful day on the water with very little wind and very enjoyable.  It looks like the bait will be around for a while and the fishing should be good.  Tim Smith and I shot some video of the automatic marker buoy.  It works real well and we will be selling them directly from this website.  We will post the video clip of it in action.

After shooting so much footage of Al catching Bass for our new video I finally had a chance to catch some bass myself. I fished with my neighbor Mike McGrath and did a number on the Bass and Blues fishing in the same area as Al.

I fished today with Andrew and his buddies from Kismet.  We fluke fished in the ocean.  We caught 5 keepers on a half-day trip.  The fish were tight to the beach to the east but it was nothing like hot fishing.  The dogfish were unbearable in water 35 feet and deeper.

I fished with Don, Lark and Nick of Atlantique today.  We headed out into the ocean to look for schools of bait and bass.  We finally found a hot area and fished the pods of bait.  We boated 3 nice fish up to 35 pounds.  It was very foggy all day and that made it a little tough but we prevailed.

Today I fished with Meryl, Bob, Mike, Phillip and Alessa fo Seaview.  It was a slow day.  We caught one bluefish outside the inlet.  We then made a bunch of drops for bottom fish but did very little.  We drifted live bait for bass and had one fish on for a few seconds and then lost it.  It was a pleasant day on the water however and everyone had a good time.

I fished again today and it was good but not as good as yesterday.  I had 10 fish with two big ones in the upper 30's.  It was tough to locate the bait today most likely because there weren't many fish pushing them up to the surface.  It was still a good day and Tim Smith shot a good bunch of footage for the new striped bass live bait DVD.

As I suspected, things broke wide open today.  It was a beautiful day and one of the best bass days I have ever had.  I found the bait and the bass were all over them.  I had fish up to 47 pounds and a bunch in the low 40's and upper 30's.  I quit when my arms wouldn't take it any more.  I probably caught 30 fish before my body gave out.  It was outstanding.

I fished today and it was very good.  I found some premium live baits and had bass up to 30 pounds.  Things are coming alive.  It should be good fishing for a while.

I Fished with Rob of Seaview today.  It was a beautiful day and the fishing turned out OK too.  We caught a couple of fluke with one nice one about 3 pounds.  We then drifted live bait for bass and connected with a beauty of about 20 pounds.  All was well and we had a good time.

I fished today and it was a mixed bag of fish.  We ended up with a bass about 20 pounds on live bait, a couple of flounder and a few triggerfish.  Fishing is kind of slow with no bait schools in the area to speak of.  The water is clean and the slip-gut is about gone so hopefully things will pick up soon.

Fished for fluke in the ocean today.  It was a beautiful day but with very little wind.  I power drifted all day and caught some nice fish.  We culled about a dozen keepers to end up with 6 fish between 3 and 5.5 pounds.  The smelt baits were the hot bait of the day.  I got them at Augie's and they are real good.

I fished with Seymour today and we had a good day of fluke fishing.  We caught 12 keepers and culled them down to our legal six fish.  All were over 4 pounds with the two largest about 6 pounds.  It was good fishing but we had most success while power drifting.  You had to work for some good fish today.

5/28-30/2004 and 6/3/2004

Sorry for the delayed reports but I have been beset with taking care of my parents who are elderly and not doing very well.  In between I have fished a few days and this is the report.

I fished on 5/ 28, 5/29 and 5/30.  On these days we fished for flounder and caught a few.  The best day was about 15 fish.  We drifted live baits for bass and caught a few up to about 20 pounds.  We also plugged a few bass along the South Beach.  It was OK fishing but nothing hot.

Today, 6/3/2004 I fished for fluke in the ocean with Seymour.  We caught our limit of 6 fish all between 3 and 5 pounds.  The 3 fish limit per man is a joke.  The statisticians for the State and Federal authorities must have a case of dementia.  The fluke are all over the place but they are cutting our quota.  Anyway, the fishing was good in about 50 feet of water.  When the wind died out we power drifted and that caught the best and biggest fish.

Sorry but no pictures.  I am having a tough time getting it all together.

6-3-2004

I fished today with my bother Flip and my mom out in the ocean for Fluke. We Caught our limit and the largest Fluke was 5 lbs. The best fishing seemed to be in 60-45 feet of water South of the Neddle.

5/19/2004

We fished for flounder again today.  It was pretty good and we put about 15 nice fat fish into the boat.  We had 6 that were over two pounds.  We then tried some bass fishing but it was slow.  We had two fish on plugs about 12 to 15 pounds.  We quit early and were pleased with the day.

5/18/2004

We did a combination day today.  We fished flounder in the morning and bass in the afternoon.  We caught about a dozen nice flounder and a dozen bass up to 35 pounds.  The bass were taken on plugs and live bait.  I had some pictures but something is messed up with my camera or the memory card and I think I lost them.

5/16/2004

I fished again today and did the same routine as the last two days but with very little success.  We did catch 3 bass between 12 and 18 pounds but that was all there was.  I guess three bass is not too bad but compared to the last two days it was a little disappointing.  The body of fish that was there obviously moved out or to another area.  I will find them again.

Captain Al Lorenzetti

5/15/2004

Seymour and I had another good day of bass fishing.  We didn't catch as many as yesterday but they were bigger.  We had about 8 fish and the biggest was about 35 pounds.  Again, all fish were caught on plugs.  Seymour's 35 pounder hit the plug and greyhounded across the water with two spectacular jumps with its whole body out of the water.  It was really exciting.

I got back from Florida last night and put my fishing gear in order.  I fished today with Seymour and Wells.  We had an excellent day with about 15 bass up to 30 pounds all on plugs.  The water is very clean and there are lots of fish around.  It looks like a very good start for the season.

There was no wind today so Mike and I decided to give it a try for some flounder. We tried the Lindenhurst Cut and Babylon Cut. We chummed heavy and never even felt a tap. Nice day though.
