Today was one of the best bass fishing days in a long time, certainly
the best of this season. Seymour and I had about 30 bass up to 30
pounds on plugs in the morning. We then did about 15 fish to 25
pounds on live bait in the afternoon. It was non stop action all
day. The fish on plugs were incredible. They were crashing the
big plugs and going wild. We had them in water only a couple of feet
deep at times and when they jumped on the plug and felt the hook they
would go ballistic and crash and run fifty yards of line. It doesn't
get any better. I think I will call it a season and hang up the
rods. Duck season opens Friday and its time to get the Benelli Black
Eagle 12 gauge off the rack and do some hunting with my buddies. I
can't promise however that I won't sneak out and throw a plug or two
during the next week.

Another good day of bass fishing. Tim Smith and I worked on
shooting video for the new Bass Fishing DVD. Bait was a little
tougher to get today than yesterday but it was there and the fish were on
them. I caught about a dozen bass and Tim was able to get some good
underwater footage. We did some action shots with me catching fish
and it worked out well. The fishing is still hot with fish up to 25
pounds today.

11/16/2003
Had another great day of bass fishing. The bait was all over the
place and the fish were on them. we landed about a dozen fish up to
25 pounds. In the morning we went out into the ocean to the west of
the inlet and there were 100 pound bluefin busting water in 40 feet south
of Gilgo Beach. We didn't mess with them and ran to the east of the
inlet. We found schools of bass and blues but no bass of any great
size. My neighbor did troll fish to 30 pounds on spoons just south
of the inlet in 40 feet. We went back inside and got on the bait
schools and had our fun.

11/12/2003
Today was probably the best day of the year for striped bass
fishing. Two of us fishing boated about 30 fish up to 30
pounds. The bait was everywhere and the fishing was super hot.
I have been experimenting with a new version of the clip rig and it works
very well. The presentation is totally natural and it produces fish
even under tough conditions. No more hooks getting snagged in the
bait and it conforms to the IGFA guidelines for setting world
records. I will be marketing it through this website in the near
future. I am working out the manufacturing and patent process for
the "Original Captain Al's Live Bait Clip Rig". Will keep
you posted.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
11/11/2003
Went out and slammed the bait and bass. We had a nice day with a
bunch of bass up to 38 pounds on live bait. We also plugged a few up
to 20 pounds over the schools of peanut bunker. The weather got a
little nasty so we headed for the hills at about 3 pm.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
11/10/2003
Tim Smith and I worked on shooting some video. We got some stuff
that we needed to finish up the fly fishing DVD. Underwater footage
of bluefish on the fly worked real well. The fish were thick under
the birds southeast of the inlet. We also did some sequences with
the Lowrance x-104C machine which is pretty incredible, and shot some
sequences for the new "Live Bait Striped Bass" DVD that should
be finished in a couple of months. The "Saltwater
Fly-Fishing" DVD should be on the market next month, just in time for
the Holidays. Keep it in mind for a good present for your fishing
buddies.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
11/9/2003
Had a good time today with the big bluefish on jigs offshore southeast
of the inlet. We caught a couple of bass also but not very
large. We then found some shad and stopped off on the way in to
catch a few nice bass to about 25 pounds. A good day of fun on the
water.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
11/8/2003
Fished for blackfish today and did a job on them again. We kept
about 15 fish from 2 to 5 pounds. We stopped and fished for bass a
little while on the way home and banged a couple of fish about 20
pounds. The wind howled all day up to 30 knots. It was
definitely a day that you appreciate the canvas enclosure.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
11/7/2003
Had a great day of fishing today. 6 bass 20 to 25 pounds on live
bait and a limit of blackfish from 3 to 6 pounds. Beautiful weather
also made is nice.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
11/6/2003
Had a couple of bass to 18 pounds today on live bait. Big
bluefish up to 15 pounds on jigs in the ocean to the east of the
inlet. Steven has fun with his 15 pound blue on light tackle.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
11/1/2003
Same deal as yesterday with the lack of bait. We decided to troll
bunker spoons to the east of the inlet. We caught a bunch of
bluefish but no bass. We stopped where the fish were thick and
jigged them which was fun. We called it a wrap and made it a short
day.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
10/31/2003
Fished for bass again today and it was kind of slow. The shad
bait became scarce and most left the inlet and the bass moved out with
them. The water is dirty because of the heavy surf and the fish
don't like that either. We did have a couple of nice fish on
plugs. The big one was about 32 pounds. Live bait produced
only one smaller fish.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
10/30/2003
Fished striped bass with live bait today and did just OK. It was
tough getting bait but we managed a some baits and the did some
fishing. We caught a few fish but nothing to brag about. Fish
maybe up to 21 pounds. It was a pick all day but OK by us. The
bait moved out of the inlet and so did most of the fish. We just
have to wait for another bunch of fish to move down the beach and into
Fire Island Inlet. It could be tomorrow. I will be there to
find out if it happens because I will be there.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
10/28/2003
Fished with John and Pat today. We had a good time with the bass
on live bait. Bait was a little tough to get this morning but we did
OK with it and caught some nice fish. We had about 8 fish to the
boat and dropped a bunch of others. Most fish were 18 to 24
pounds. We found a bunch of bait late in the day and had a few more
fish.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
10/25/2003
Fished with Seymour today. Seymour thought we should have some
fun and lighten up the atmosphere since we were fishing the Babylon Tuna
Club Striped Bass Tournament. Considering that it is near Halloween,
we changed our appearance a little. We also figured that no one
would recognize us and that we could fish incognito. It worked
pretty well and we had a lot of laughs. Tim C. Smith took some good
photos. We caught a bunch of bass up to 26 pounds on live bait and
had fun doing it. Everyone is too serious about this fishing stuff
so we thought we would lighten it up a bit. Billy Turnbull of West
Islip won the tournament with a real nice 38 pound bass. After
Billy's fish all the other placing fish were in the upper 20 pound
range. It was a good tournament and should be much bigger next
year. Top prize money with Calcutta was near four grand.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
10/24/2003
Fished with Seymour today and had a good time of it. We had about
12 to 15 bass with three of the fish in the mid to upper thirties.
Some big fish moved in over the last day. The weather conditions were
not very good but the fishing was excellent. Another good day on the
water instead of -----? Photos to follow shortly.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
Rosa, Tom and Anthony landing then showing off there 30
pounder

10/23/2003
Fished with John Dall today. We beat up on the bass pretty good
on live bait. We also had lots of problems with equipment failures
but it was in large part due to the weather. We were fishing in 25
to 30 knot winds against the tide and out lines crossed a couple of times
when big fish were running off the baits. We dropped a fish well
into the 30's and another about 28 pounds at the boat. we boated a
bunch up to 22 pounds however and had a good time despite the terrible
wind and cold. It was a tough but good day on the water.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
10/23/2003
Mike McGrath boated his first Striped Bass on his new Boston Whaler. The 24
Lbs. Bass jumped on a live Shad. Conditions were COLD and Windy!!!

Tim C. Smith
10/22/200
Fished with Seymour today. We had a bunch of bass up
to 25 pounds fishing live bait. Lots of double hook-ups and plenty
of action. It was cold and tough but we still had a good time.
Good cold weather clothing is a must at this time of the year.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
10/20/2003
Fished with Peter and Allan today. We had another
great day with striped bass on live bait. We boated about 10 fish up

Captain Al Lorenzetti
10/20/2003
I fished with my parents today and we had 5 fish to 20
pounds
Tim C. Smith

10/19/2003
Fished today with Tom, Bill and John. We had a good
time with the striped bass on live bait. We boated about a dozen
fish up to about 25 pounds. The weather turned lousy about noon and
we decided to call it a day before we were soaking wet from the rain and
wind. It was a good day of fishing however and that is the way it is
sometimes.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
10/18/2003
Had another great day of bass fishing today. We
boated at least 15 fish on live bait. All the fish were in the 18 to
25 pound class.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
10/17/2003
Fished today with Seymour. We had a great day
fishing for striped bass with live bait. The final tally was about
10 fish from 18 to 27 pounds. The water was real dirty in the
morning because of all the wind over the past couple of days but it
cleaned up pretty well by afternoon. Bait was tough to catch today
at least it was for me.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
10/11/2003
I finally had chance to take my brother Flip and his
friend Jeff out Bass fishing! we had a good day with 4 fish up to 20
pounds.
Tim C. Smith

10/10/2003
Had a great day of bass fishing today. We caught
about 10 bass up to about 30 pounds on live bait.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
10/8/2003
Fished today with Seymour and we beat on them. Lots
of bass up to 30 pounds on live bait. We left early because we had
our fill. Sometimes you have to give the fish a break and not be too
greedy. Anyway, it makes me feel good.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
10/7/2003
Had a good day today shooting video with Tim C.
Smith. We are working on a new edition of "Live Bait Striped
Bass Fishing" to be released late this year. The old version is
still good but we wanted to incorporate a lot of new technology and
techniques that have developed over the years so that we could keep the
public up to date on the striped bass fishing scene. It's tough to
shoot video and fish at the same time but we did real well.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
10/6/2003
Fished today with Mike Faccibene and his son Jack.
These guys are real fishermen and we did pretty well with the bass.
Jack did a great job of fighting both the baits and the stripers. He
was a real trooper all day and a great fisherman and good sport. We
had a lot of fun catching our limit of fish up to 21 pounds. It was
cold but Jack had lots of hand warmers to keep him feeling right. A
great day on the water with two great guys.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
10/3/2003
Fished today with Danny, Bob and Brendan of
Saltaire. We fished for striped bass with live bait. We had a
good time and boated four nice bass up to about 18 pounds. It was
chilly today but a sign of fall and good fishing.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
10/02/2003

well. We had about 8 bass up to 25 pounds and beat it home before
the heavy winds. It was really a beautiful morning.

10/1/2003
Fished with Seymour and Steven again. It wasn't as
good as yesterday but we did catch a couple of striped bass on live bait
up to 20 pounds. The weather was good and we had fun.
The second clip for the Channel 12 news "Fishing
Show" aired today at 10 minutes to the hour all day. It
featured fishing for porgies and looked pretty good. Check it out if
you have the time. A link will be on this page shortly or you can
see it on my home page.

9/24/2003
Had a good day of bass fishing today. We fished live
bait and boated 5 fish up to 23 pounds. We had a lot of action with
lots of hits and run-offs. The water is finally cleaning up a bit
but it could be better but who is complaining?
Captain Al Lorenzetti
9/23/2003
Fished with Seymour today. We had fun with the
striped bass catching 3 fish up to 17 pounds on live bait. It was a
picture perfect day on the water.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
9/22/2003
Fished today with Scott and Dave of Channel 12 News.
We did a couple of sequences on fishing Long Island which will be
broadcast on 9/24 and 10/1 at 25 minutes past the hour (I think) all
day. We caught striped bass on live bait and porgies. The
water cleaned up a bit since yesterday and things seem to be
improving. It should get back to normal by the end of the week.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
9/21/2003
Fished today with Wes, Mitch and Mark of Seaview.
The weather was good but the water was still roiled due to the passing of
hurricane Isabel. We did well with the porgies but fishing live bait
was a bust. We tried fluke fishing in the ocean for about an hour
and had one short fluke. It will take another day or two for the
water to clean up and then the fishing should be good again.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
9/16/2003
Fished for striped bass again today. The weather was
beautiful and the fishing was excellent. We had 6 bass up to 20
pounds and left them biting. All fish were taken on live

back on the water today and scored with striped bass. We had 3 fish

Benjamin and Jordan. We hit the ocean fluke grounds and put away
five quick keepers. We then did porgy the porgy thing and caught a
good bunch of fish. We finished off the day drifting live bait for
bass, blues or weakfish but didn't have any luck. It was a good day
of fishing.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
8/28/2003

had to power-drift again. It worked pretty well and we caught a
bunch of fluke up to about 6 pounds. It was a beautiful cool clear
day.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
8/27/2003
Fished with Seymour today. We did the live bait
thing early without much results. We then fished in the ocean for

tomorrow is another day and I am going to break out the big stuff and try
for a doormat.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
8/26/2003
I fished with my son Luke today. He is back visiting
from California. We had a great day together fluke fishing in the
ocean. The weather was beautiful and we had a lot of laughs
together. We also beat up on the fluke with a dozen keepers up to
7.5 pounds. We are going to have a family fluke feast tonight.
Below are photos of the big fish and Luke eating the last bite of fried
fluke. Nothing is better than fishing with your son and a family
fish fry at the end of the day.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
8/25/2003
Fished with Brad Brown of Saltaire today. We drifted
some live bait early in the day and connected with a bluefish of 12

then headed out into the ocean for fluke fishing. We found a good
body of fish and caught about a dozen keepers up to 7 pounds. It was
good fishing and a good day on the water.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
8/24/2003
Fished today with Tony Ettinger, his son Jared and Jared's
friend Mario. We drifted live bait for weaks, bass and blues in the
morning but didn't have any action. We then headed into the ocean
for some fluke fishing. It was a slower day than yesterday but we
did catch some keepers. All had a good time even though it was a
little chilly and breezy on the water.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
8/23/2003
Fished today with Steve, Alissa and their son and
daughter, Max and Lily. We had a very good day of fishing. We

had fun catching a bunch of porgies, seabass and blowfish. We then
did the live bait thing for blues and bass. We caught one big blue
and two stripers that were 15 and 17 pounds. The weather was finally
excellent with a good dry northerly breeze. It was a pleasure to be
out on the water. It was not pleasant getting home and losing
electricity for 12 hours.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
8/13/2003
Fished with Brad and Lloyd of Saltaire. We caught a
bunch of porgies and a triggerfish. We then drifted live bait and
scored with 4 bass. All the fish were about 16 pounds. It was
pretty good action and we dropped a few fish. Nice foggy day that
kept the boat traffic to a minimum. Good day of fishing.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
8/12/2003
Fished today with Dave Rappaport and his sons Jonathan,
Mark, Benjamin and Jordan. We caught a mess of porgies and seabass
and the crew had a good time of it. We then fished live bait for the
big fish. At first we weren't too lucky and dropped a big bass and a
couple of big bluefish. We persisted and our luck changed.
Near the end of the day we finally hooked up with and boated two keeper
bass. It was a good finish to a good day. Everyone was happy.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
8/8/2003
Fished today with Sheri, Michael, Trish and Zane. We
fished for porgies and caught a bunch. We also caught three
triggerfish and a mess of small seabass. Near the end of the trip,
we decided to fish for bass and blues with live bait. We caught two
big bluefish between 10 and 12 pounds each. The boys had a
double-header and it was wild. We managed to boat both fish.
It was a fun day even though we had a heavy drizzle for about an
hour. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
8/6/2003
Fished with Ande, Aaron, Michael and Daniel of Fair
Harbor. We had a good time catching a mess of porgies, triggerfish

change and it was a good trip.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
8/4/2003
Fished with Brad Brown of Saltaire and his brother-in-law
Lloyd. We caught some porgies and a triggerfish and then drifted
live bait for bass. We couldn't find a bass but caught big
bluefish. We managed to have a good day of fishing in between the
bad weather patterns.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
8/2/2003
Fished for a few hours in the afternoon with Captain Rich
Santos. We messed around and tried fishing with swimming
plugs. We hit it pretty good with three keeper bass. It was a
fun afternoon.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
7/31/2003
Fished with Seymour today. We were targeting striped
bass with live bait but the bass eluded us. We only fished a short
time due to the weather. Conditions were tough with an east wind at
about 20 to 25 knots. We did catch some big bluefish however and
they were a blast. The biggest was just under 12 pounds.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
7/30/2003
Fished with Seymour, Dan, Al and Dave of Dunewood.
We went tuna fishing in the Texas Tower, Canyon Tip area. We fished
on Dave's boat, a 32 foot L&H. Really beautiful boat and very
fast. Left at 5 am and started fishing about 8 am. At 9:30 we
spotted a large school of 100 to 200 pound tuna busting bait on the
surface. I worked the boat around the edge and just ahead of the
school. We hooked up a good fish and Al fought it for about 45
minutes on a 50 International outfit. We boated it and it was about
150 pounds. In the afternoon we hooked up with two more of about 80
pounds and 50 pounds and put them in the boat and headed for home.
We also had a white marlin up in the lures hitting everything but we
couldn't get a hook in him. It was a fun day and a long time since I
fished for tuna but it all came back real fast.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
7/28/2003
Fished today with Michael Strange, his son Mark and
Michael's friend Jeff and Jeff's son Louis who are visiting from
France. We had a good day. We drifted live bait and banged a
couple of bass in the morning. We then did some bottom fishing and
had some fun. We caught a bunch of porgies and a few
triggerfish. We then drifted again for bass and caught a fish about
15 pounds and then the fish that made the day, a 30 pound bass.
Everyone had a good time and the weather was beautiful.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
7/20/2003
Just got home from a family trip to Florida. Went
out to the Virginia wreck today and trolled the area for tuna. We
saw lots of fish in the 30 to 50 pound range jumping and working on bait
in the area. We also saw a couple of 100 pound plus fish clear the
water. None of them had mouths and we stiffed it for the entire
day. We tried every kind of lure imaginable but with no
results. It was a beautiful day on the ocean however and good to be
trolling offshore again.
On 7/10, Kevin Brink of Babylon landed a 410 pound
thresher shark after a six hour battle. The picture of the fish is
below.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
7-15-2003
Fished for Fluke today in 65 to 70 feet SE of F.I. inlet with not
much luck with the big fish plenty of shorts though. On the way back close
to the inlet I came across seagulls picking off Porgies on the
surface. The fish where so tightly packed and spooked from down below that I
dipped the Fluke net into the ball of Porgies and filled the net. If I would
of had more time I would of loved to live line one and find out what had
them so balled up.
Tim

7/7/2003
I didn't fish today but the word is out that the fluke
fishing offshore has heated up with fish up to 9 pounds. Deep is
good from 80 to 90 feet to the southeast of Fire Island Inlet.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
7/1/2003
Fished today with Seymour and his grandsons Cameron and
Johnny. We caught some porgies and had a good time. Fished
live bait for bass but didn't connect with any. A short day which is
best for the youngsters. They get bored too fast and you don't want
to turn them off.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
6/30/2003
Worked on shooting some fly-fishing video today.
Trying to finish up the fly-fishing DVD and having a hard time finding
feeding schools of bluefish over the past couple of days. Tim and I
had them today but couldn't finish the job. One more shoot should do
it. The video is almost complete with just a couple more shots to
make it right. It should be out in the fall. I am really
excited about this venture and it should fun to watch.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
6/28/2003
Fished today with Ken Ross and Mark and a bunch of their
kids. It was a busy day with a big crew. The fishing was a
little slow but we did get a bunch of porgies and a few flounder. We
then drifted live bait and connected with a keeper striped bass. A
good day of fishing.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
6/27/2003
Fished with Seymour and Wells today. We had a very
good day of fishing considering that the fishing has slowed a bit.
We caught a bunch of porgies and had some fun bottom fishing in the
morning. We then fished live bait for bass and caught 3 fish up to
20 pounds. We also plugged a bass of about 15 pounds. The
bluefish showed up in the back bay and we plugged a bunch and had a good
time with it. We kept a few for eating and for a couple of buddies
that are shark fishing tomorrow and want them for bait. It was a
good day of fishing and beautiful weather.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
6/25/2003
Fished with Dick Kossoff and his buddy Woody of Seaview.
We caught some porgies and a couple of flounder. We then drifted
live bait for striped bass and connected with a couple of fish and dropped
a couple. We kept a fish of about 15 pounds. The weather was
beautiful, hot and calm. It was an enjoyable morning.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
6/24/2003
Fished today for bass. We had a good day. The
porgies are the biggest I have ever seen in the Great South Bay.
Fish up to 1.5 pounds and plenty of them. We then drifted live bait
for a bunch of bass and dropped a whopper when the swivel opened up.
Some you loose but we had some good fish and it was a good day.

Fished live bait for bass. Tim C. Smith and I began
to shoot a new video, actually DVD. This new DVD will be the new
version of "Fishing For Striped Bass - Live Bait" which was my
first video shot in 1992. Many things have changed since then and it
is time to update the original and make it even better. One thing
new is that I am using an awesome new fishing combo for bass, an Accurate
Boss Magnum reel spooled with 25 pound test Sufix "Tritanium"
high abrasion line on a Rogue SW805C 8 foot rod. It is a high tech
and supurbe fishing outfit and I love to catch big stripers with it. We caught
some live bait and drifted them for some nice size stripers. Tim
shot the bait scenes and the fishing scenes from his his boat. It
was a productive day of fishing and shooting video. Hopefully this
DVD will be complete by the end of the year. We are just putting the
finishing touches on the "Saltwater Fly Fishing with Captain Al
Lorenzetti" and it should be available later in the summer.

Fished today with John Dall. John and I usually do
pretty well when fishing together. We had a good day of fishing
against the tough weather conditions. The sun was shining but the
wind was howling out of the east. East is usually least but today
was an exception. We had 12 nice bass up to 22 pounds. Lots of
action all day and it was fun. All fish were taken on live bait.

Fished with Seymour today. We got some bait and
drifted it for bass. We banged 10 fish up to 28 pounds. Had
problems with fog again but no rain. Looks like the weather is going
to get better. The bass are all fat and eating like pigs.
Bluefish are a problem with chopping up the bait.

A couple of odds and ends. I didn't fish today but
other people did. Scott Leonard the new owner of Augie's Custom
Tackle fished today and captured a nice 35 pound bass (picture
below). Also got a message from a fellow fishing buddy Ed Simonetti
about a striped bass that was caught that was very disfigured. He
calls it a frog fish. It looks like some damage happened in its
early stages of development but it wasn't lethal and the fish survived and
obviously did pretty well. Also, judging from the way its two eyes
are both looking forward or could at least both be directed toward the
front without its snout in the way, it could be the first fish with
stereoscopic vision and depth perception. I wonder if it would have
been a superior predator.

Fished with Bart Romano, his son Frankie and their friend
John. We had a good day of fishing. We found some good live
bait and drifted them for bass. We caught 7 fish up to 20
pounds. One of the fish we caught had a Littoral Society tag in
it. The weather was less than desirable with very heavy fog but
the wind was calm. It was a day that really makes you appreciate
good electronics. My Lowrance 104C GPS was awesome for navigating
to all my fishing spots and used in conjunction with the radar made it a
fishable and productive day. Everyone had a good time.

Fished with Seymour. We loaded up on live bait and
fished for bass. We boated three bass but all were on the small side
at about 15 pounds. The weather was lousy again with fog.

Fished today with Joe Vitigliano and his buddy Joe from
New Jersey. We caught a bunch of live bait in the morning and fished
them throughout the day. We caught 2 striped bass and dropped a
couple of other fish. Fishing was pretty slow but we had enough
action and good weather to make it a good day of fishing. We had a
bunch of smaller fish chasing the bait but they are tough to hook
up. We also had six heroes for lunch. I never saw two
guys that could eat that much. It was a good day.

6/9/2003
Fished with Tom Corcoran and three of his buddies, Kevin,
Billy and Anthony. Tom also ran his boat and we fished two people
from each boat. The primary target for the day was to catch a
striped bass on the fly. We gave it a good shot and saw some bass on
the flats but couldn't get them to eat. We did catch a few bluefish
on the fly but overall it was a slow day. We of course had to drift
some live bait just to keep the big bass honest and scored with a fish of
26 pounds. The sun finally came out - unbelievable! It
was a good day and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. I had a good
time fishing with this crew.

6/5/2003
Fished for striped bass today. The morning was slow
but the afternoon was red hot. We caught some good live bait and
drifted them around the good spots. We found the fish stacked up and
boated about 15 fish up to 25 pounds. We left them biting as we just
had enough for the day.

5/30/2003
Fished today with Wells and Seymour. We had a nice
catch of flounder in the Sore Thumb. We then drifted live bait for
bass for a while but didn't have any action. Slow day on the bass
front but good on the flounder.

5/29/2003
Fished with Frankie and Bart Romano and their good friend
Carl. We had a very good day and a lot of fun. The weather was
beautiful for a change and the fishing was as good as it has been all
season. We fished for flounder and did pretty well catching 20
keeper fish with a couple about 2 pounds. We then did some bass
fishing and caught two fish on live bait. One fish was 18 pounds and
the other was a real beauty at 32 pounds. The crew supplied some
great food for lunch and good company. A real good day.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
5/28/2003
Fished with Seymour today. We caught a nice mess of
flounder, about 15 and then drifted live bait for bass. We connected
with 6 bass. The biggest was 30 pounds and next biggest was 28
pounds. The others were respectable also. A good day and the
sun even came out for a change.

5/27/2003 PM Shift
Fished with Scott Leonard and Mike of Augie's Custom
Tackle of Babylon, NY. We headed out about 4 pm and fished for
flounder. We beat them up catching about 30 keepers. We then
fished live bait for bass and banged 3 keepers in the course of about a
half dozen drifts. Mike won the honor of buying dinner for all three
of us by catching the first keeper flounder. He said he was in and
was a good sport about winning. We feasted on a great top notch
dinner at The Pier in Babylon and Mike's wallet is a lot slimmer
today. It was a lot of fun and some good laughs and good fishing.

5/27/2003
Fished with Norman Nixon, his buddy Gary and Gary's sons
Erik and Alex. We tried flounder fishing in the Sore Thumb but only
caught skates. That was a disappointment but then we headed east and
found schools of bluefish on a feeding frenzy. We used light
spinning tackle and Ava 005's with short traces of wire leader and boated
about 30 fish. We released a bunch and everyone had a good
time. Erik and Alex were casting real good by the time we were
finished fishing.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
5/23/2003
Fished with Seymour today. We caught a load of good
live bait and then fished them for striped bass. We caught a half
dozen fish in about an hour. The bluefish schools were everywhere
and Seymour wanted to fish for them with the fly rod. He did and we
had a ball catching a bunch of blues on the fly. Nice fish up to 6
pounds.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
5/21/2003
Fished with Seymour today. Tough day. Weather
was lousy, rain, cold. Bait was tough to get but we managed a
few. The bluefish around the inlet were so thick that you couldn't
get a bait to the bottom. Had a good bass on but dropped it and then
we ran out of baits thanks to the ravenous bluefish. We cast popping
plugs and had fun with the bluefish with fish up to 6 pounds on light
tackle. Not a total loss and we had some laughs. We quit a
little early and headed for our warm dry homes.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
5/20/2003
Fished with Phil and Steve today. We caught live
bait which was not easy today but it worked. We fished the inlet
area and scored well with nice striped bass. The catch for the day
was about 15 fish up to 27 pounds with about 5 fish in the 20 pound
class. We tried ocean fluke but only caught 2 shorts. We
couldn't find the body of fish. Bluefish are all over the bay and
inlet. It was a productive and fun filled day with lots of action
and some nice bass. The fish are getting bigger every day.
Some cows should be here real soon. Great fishing right now!

Captain Al Lorenzetti
5/15/2003
Fished with Seymour Pugach of Babylon. We tried
ocean fluke but there was no wind and no drift so we quit that and went
back inside. We did the bass thing with live bait and had a couple
of fish up to 16 pounds. We then did some flounder fishing and had
about 10 fish to over 2 pounds. It was a nice pick for an hour and
all the fish were a pound or better.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
5/14/2003
Had a very interesting day today.
Found some top notch live bait and drifted them for bass. Caught 3
bass on live bait up to 20 pounds. Had two bass about 14 pounds on
plugs. We then did a little flounder fishing and had about 10 fish
up to 2 pounds. We could have sunk the boat with bluefish on plugs
with fish up to 10 pounds but we ran away from them to concentrate on the
bass. We tried a little weakfishing but no luck on that
front. I think the weaks need about another week to get established
on the fishing grounds.

5/10/2003
Fished with Seymour again. We decided to try ocean
fluke fishing. We did it on a gamble because nobody else had fished
in the ocean for fluke. On the second drop we found some fish.
We caught eight fish up to 7 pounds with four fish over 5 pounds. It
was excellent. We then went back into the bay and had a ball with
striped bass and blues on popping plugs. We caught till we were
tired and then called it a day. It was excellent fishing.
Below is a shot of Seymour with a 7 pound fluke and 12 pound bass.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
5/9/2003
Fished with Seymour today. We hit the Sore Thumb for
flounder up to 2.5 pounds. Lots of skates made fishing tough.
We then headed for the backbay and beat up on the bluefish up to 6 pounds
on popping plugs. Lots of fun for the first trip of the year.
The water is crystal clear and I think it will be a good fishing year.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
4/29/2003
Mike from Augie's fished today and did a bang up job on
the flounders. He had 25 fish on the tide and some real good size
fish to boot. The warming water must have done the trick and got the
fish moving. He was fishing in the big bay somewhere east of the
Captree Bridge.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
4/25/2003
Fished in the back bay today in the morning. The
weather was beautiful and it was calm. I plugged for bass and was
rewarded with the first two fish of the season. The fish were a
little sluggish due to the cold water and I had a lot of follows.
When they did decide to hit the plug they did it pretty well. It was
fun to start the season with a couple of stripers.

Captain Al Lorenzetti
4/20/2003
Two boats caught keeper striped bass today. Both
boats were chumming and both caught one fish. These are the first
bass that I know of that were caught and were keeper size in this area.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
4/14/2003
Fished today with Scott Leonard of Augie's Custom
Tackle. We tried a couple of exploratory spots and caught nothing
but skates. We then headed west into the Bay off Babylon. The
water was warmer than to the east or near the inlet. We caught 5
nice fish up to 2.04 pounds. It was still cold with the warmest
water at about 49 degrees. It was still fun being on the
water. Scott's Regulator was doing 54 miles per hour on the way
home.
Captain Al Lorenzetti
3/27/2003
Fished with Scott Leonard of Augie's Custom Tackle
today. We hit it for a few hours in the afternoon on Scott's new 26
Regulator. Lots of chum and fresh worms from his shop. We
caught 9 flounder, all keepers with 3 fish being respectable size.
It was a pick but was pretty good for this time of season. The water
was 52 degrees where we fished and the fish were spitting up chum in the
keeper bucket which means they are on the feed. It was nice to catch
a couple of flatties after all the Florida fish which are a little foreign
to me. It was a good day of fun and the catch will taste really
sublime with a nice salad and some rice. I also broke in my new Loomis and
Rouge bait caster rods. It was fun!

Captain Al Lorenzetti
FLOUNDER SEASON HAS BEGUN!
Flounder season is off to a slow
start. The water is still very cold from the prolonged and very cold
winter. A few fish are being caught however with the afternoon hours
on sunny days proving to be most productive. Heavy chumming is a
must and you must give each spot at least a half hour in order for the
cold and sluggish fish to respond to the chum. Fish are being caught
on the Heckscher Park Grounds and West Channel. Good luck in the
upcoming fishing season.
