Bluefin Tuna Endure After Oil Spill Fears that last year's BP PLC oil spill would decimate the bluefin tuna that spawn in the Gulf of Mexico haven't played out, with the population of the prized fish likely to be cut by less than 4%, a federal study has concluded. The oil from the biggest offshore spill in U.S. history covered about one-fifth of the habitat of the Gulf's recently hatched tuna, and scientists feared that could hammer the future population of the fish. Associated PressThe Gulf of Mexico's bluefin-tuna population is likely to be cut by less than 4% because of the BP oil spill. An analysis based on two different models by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, has concluded that the spill "will likely result in less than a 4% reduction in future spawning biomass" of bluefin tuna in the Gulf. It sounds like a libertarian twist on the classic novella by Ernest Hemingway, The Old Man and the Sea, but for Carlos Rafael, the saga is completely true. Rafael and his crew were using nets to catch bottom-dwellers when they inadvertently snagged the giant tuna. However, federal fishery enforcement agents took control of the behemoth when the boat returned to port. The reason for the seizure was procedural: While Rafael had the appropriate permits, fishermen are only allowed to catch tuna with a rod and reel. The votes have been counted and Canadians have swept both the consumer and partner categories of the 2011 Mercury Films Festival. Mercury Marine announced Oct. 27 during a media event in Fort Lauderdale that Lonnie King and Cody Graham have won the Mercury Films Festival promotion for their consumer and partner videos. Mercury invited consumers, partners and employees to submit their own on-the-water videos this summer for a chance to win a free engine, fishing trips and more. King, a resident of Orleans, Ontario, won the consumer category for his “Merky Dreams” video that starred his two sons, 9-year-old Kelsey and 7-year-old Kalen. The video tells the story of a young boy’s nightmare and how Mercury comes to the rescue. The family won a Mercury engine of their choice for being voted the top consumer video. “Our entry was inspired by the fact that we were having troubles with our current non-Mercury motor and to win this contest could not come at a better time,” King said. “Having a dependable motor would certainly provide my family peace of mind.” The King family accepted the award at an event on Oct. 27 at the International Game Fish Association headquarters in Fort Lauderdale. Graham of Victoria, British Columbia, won the Mercury partner category for his “Mercury Arctic Adventure” documentary detailing Shockwave Seats President David Smith and Discovery Channel adventurer Bear Grylls’ 8,000-mile record run from the North Atlantic, through the Northwest Passage, to the Pacific Northwest in a RIB equipped with triple Mercury Verado engines. "Winning the Merc Film contest is a testament to the hard work David Smith has put in over the years living on the leading edge of marine innovation, which includes crazy adventures,” said Graham. “Filming during the arctic mission will be an experience I keep with me for the rest of my life and I'd like to thank Mercury for the opportunity to showcase the journey and David Smith's story." Graham, the director of Media One Multimedia which produced the video, won a VIP trip for two to the 2012 Bassmaster Classic. More than 300 videos were submitted during the Mercury Films Festival and tens of thousands of people visited the contest website during the four-month promotion. Gary Soldati of Big Fish Lures caught a fifty one pound Bass on the same style lures Capt. Al uses for plugging Striped Bass around here, the Giant Pike. For More Info Another windy weekend made the fishing difficult in the Great South Bay so it was no surprise that the anglers that were able to venture out of the inlet were rewarded with big fish. Fisherman who fished in the the bay struggled with dirty water and lack of bait compliments of the never ending west blow. Many boats fished hard all day and never had a touch. My boat the Argo managed two small fish, one on an Eel and the other on a plug with the total weight of both Bass less the twenty pounds. Angler Luke Belford aboard Gary Arnold's boat "Special K" managed a 24.2 ounce Striper in the murky bay water that was good for third place. The winning Bass was taken in the ocean off of Tobay where bait made a brief appearance. The sharp crew aboard the "Capt. Surly" took advantage of situation and weighed in the winning fish that was boated by Damien Zusi. After the weigh-in and the prize money was handed out the Cole family of the Kismet Inn once again provided a great buffet and party. Tim C. Smith Final Standings2011 a Banner Year for Young Striped Bass 10/20/2011
Newswise — Preliminary results from a 2011 survey conducted by researchers at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) suggest the production of a strong class of young-of-year striped bass in the Virginia portion of Chesapeake Bay. The 2011 year class represents the group of fish hatched this spring. The results are good news for the recreational and commercial anglers who pursue this popular game fish because this year class is expected to grow to fishable size in 3 to 4 years. The results are also good news for Chesapeake Bay, where striped bass play an important ecological role as top predators. Albert McReynolds no longer owns the world striped bass record. The former Atlantic City resident held it with a 78-pound, 8-ounce striper he caught on Sept. 21, 1982, until Wednesday morning, when the International Game Fish Association approved an 81-pound, 14-ounce heavyweight from Connecticut angler Greg Myerson. "Good for him," McReynolds said Wednesday from his new fishing headquarters in Naples, Fla. "It's really wonderful. Now people in Connecticut have something to shout about." So how did the new record-holder feel? Vitek met with fellow IGFA officials early Wednesday to go over the details one more time, and then authorized the record. He said the IGFA recently requested testimonials from Myerson and the weighmaster who certified the catch. Read More |
